Greetings,
My local WalMart is selling off some HP notebooks for drastically
slashed prices. One has an AMD turion and nVidia graphics, and it looks
like it would fit my needs.
Is there any particular reason I should *not* buy an HP notebook for
running Linux audio apps ? I won't be using the internal sound hardware,
so that's a non-issue.
Best,

Hello,
I have been using my hammerfall light (digi9636) under linux for quite some
time to record s/pdif. I recently got an expansion board (AEB8-O) to use the
hammerfall for output as well. I cannot get it to output music in alsa, and
I'm not sure why. The really confusing part is that I can get a faint and
very distorted sound out of the board if I intentionally reverse the wire
(ground/signal polarity) between the hammerfall and the expansion board. I
don't see any settings that are relevant to this sort of output in
alsamixer, Anyone have any ideas?
Here is what I did. I connected the boards and powered up my machine. Both
green and red lights were lit. I then started up JACK + Ardour and connected
the outputs of my ardour master out to all of the sound outputs of the
digi9636 and then started the music. I couldn't hear anything through my
headphones connected to the AEB8-O no matter which port I used.
I thought that I had perhaps reversed the polarity of the cable connecting
the digi9636 to the AEB-O, so I turned off my machine and reversed the
connector on the digi9636. When I powered up neither of the lights were lit.
However, when I tried to play music, after about 15 seconds of play I could
hear a very faint, very distorted version of the song I was trying to play.
I turned off my machine and changed the jumpers on the AEB-O to the other
decibel level (even though they seemed to be on the louder setting by
default) and tried again with both polarity settings. I still had the green
and red lights lit when the cable was set to the correct polarity and still
no sound. When I reversed the polarity again, there was the same very faint
distorted music after several seconds of silence, and still no lights.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
-- Alex
Hi All
I'm giving some fairly serious consideration to acquiring a second-hand
synth with an arpeggiator, partly so that it gets me an arpeggiator,
partly so that I've actually got some physical knobs that I can twiddle
to change parameters in real-time.
Before doing this, however, I thought that I would have a look at
Qmidiarp. I have fired this up, selected 'Add Arp' and am now thinking
to myself "now what?" There is no help in the application, 'man
qmidiarp' gets me nothing and searching for documentation just gets me
to the Sourceforge page for AlsaModularSynth. Unfortunately the
documentation page there doesn't mention qmidiarp.
So, can anyone point me to documentation for this, or does it not exist?
Cheers

Hi list
I have this Midikeyboard here and sustainedals and a behringer midi controller and when I'm not making music its just switched off.
Do you know any ways to receive midi events to start programms, execute shell-scripts or using other things you normaly do with your computer-keyboard and shortcuts?

"Chamber Music of Jeremy Gill" was released on the Albany record label
today. I served as co-producer and recording engineer for this project
which features performances from some of the finest chamber music
soloists and ensembles on stage today. (Parker String Quartet, Mimi
Stillman, Charles Abramovic, and the Extension Brass Ensemble)

As testament to the incredible advancements within the open source audio
community in recent years, this project was recorded and mastered using
exclusively OSS. Specifically, the sessions were tracked
(24bit/88.2kHz) in Ardour and mastered using Jamin and TimeMachine.
Additionally, all computers involved in the production process were
running Studio64, a Debian-based multimedia distribution of GNU/Linux.

Hi,
I;ve an fatar sl 880 and I'm searching now for a piano soundmodule so I
don't have to use my Linux box for playing piano always.
What are good soundmodules with a acceptable piano sound?
Thanks in advance,

There you go - so it can be done. Thanks Ron.
Think I'll stick to my external card though - better connectors,
headphone monitor, etc. (And hooked directly into a Soundcraft Compact
10 mixer.)
One day I might actually get the time to use all this - haven't even had
the chance build myself a non-crashing Rosegarden yet :-(
Cheers

Hi,
After Dave Phillips last release I got to thinking that there is a
complete lack AFAIK of mixes being done with the tracks that are being
released.
So, I would like to ask for a refresh of the best of the new tracks that
were released since the start of the year.
Once I have a list I will endeavor to build a DJ mix and put it online.
In fact I will aim to make it a yearly mix as a round up of the stuff
that has been done.
This will not be released for sale like the CD that was made. It will
simply be a mix of the tracks that have been released attempting to find
a nice balance and showcase the quality work that is being done.
I will work on it over the next couple of months with the goal of having
it ready before end of year.
I already have a few that I intend to use mostly from the past couple of
months though.
I'll be weeding through LAM too but some people here might have some
favorites they would like to recommend or even some new releases that
they would like to submit for listening pleasure.
Cheers.

Don't know much about VirtualBox, but have you tried to run it with
Wine? I'm using a utility for my Yamaha QY70 inside Wine and with an
Audiophile 2496 and it works very well (that software is an old Win 3.1
application, though).
