does anyone know an alternative to timidity.
i am finding it incredibly unstable and fickle. i like how it has all the
general midi sounds(as horrid as they are) all set up and on the standard
programs and channels, but it seems to crash all the time when using jack
and midi apps. i can't figure out what it is that is causing me the grief
but i need an alternative to compose(notation) with.
i know there are things like fluidsynth but it requires such maintenance and
programming patches it seems a little counter intuitive when i need to get
ideas on the page fast.
thanks.

You mean like in this screenshot of snd-ls from the snd manual?

Use GNU/Linux: free culture for a free society
Hi Dirk,
I think Hydrogen comes with some songs by default, at least with Ubuntu
packages... in Kubuntu I have:
hydrogen - Simple drum machine/step sequencer
hydrogen-drumkits - drumkits for Hydrogen
The second one is a set of different drumkits, try some of them, depending of
what you're trying to get you'll find the one you need, I like very much the
ultraacoustik drumkit :)
The best to learn is just to load a demo song, a drumkit, and just start
playing with it, you can do *almost* anything with Hydrogen you could need ;)
Have fun!
Jorge.
Greetings,
Yesterday I received the May 2008 issue of the Linux Journal, in which
you can read my article on Jean-Pierre Lemoine's AVSynthesis.
Today I found that LJ has placed the article on-line here:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10036
The on-line presentation is actually better (IMO) because you can click
on the images for a much clearer view of the program's parts and
procedures. The text is the same in the hard-copy and on-line.
AVSynthesis is a very powerful app with great potential for the aspiring
audio/visual artist, but it needs more more testing under Linux.
Jean-Pierre is willing to help, but he needs input from users. Hopefully
the article might inspire a few more intrepid souls. :)
Jean-Pierre: Feel free to add a link to the article in your blog and on
the AVS details page.
Best,

Hi all,
I want to setup a machine that "talks" (text-to-speech) with
a number (say, 4 at a time) of parallel voices. The voices will be
positioned dynamically (in between utterances) and freely in a room. As
speech synthesizers, I think I will go for either rsynth or mbrola
(rsynth, I think, eats more CPU and sounds less natural).
Two setups come to mind: (1) I could try and use a number of soundcards
and hard-wire each to an individual loudspeaker. (2) Or, use a single
surround soundcard with its front and rear speakers, and a mixer.
In setup (1), some shell script would decide where to place the voice
and route the speech synthesizer output to the right soundcard. In setup
(2), some realtime mixing (amixer...) of sounds would have to happen;
the mixer's input pan would send the sound to some position in the room.
Setup (1) sounds cool to me, since the hardware (soundcards) is
inexpensive, and since each voice will come from a visible source.
Have you made experiences with setups like these? Will a [rd]ecent PC
cope anyway? Is a RT kernel needed? I've been talking about the software
I know, but maybe some other program out there would work better?
Thanks for your comments!

Dear All,
I need to have something that will do a pitchshift which I want to be able
to set up the curve on and ideally use as a plugin/fx box/in some way.
Anyone got any suggestions? Googling has been hard :-(
God Bless

Greetings,
I took a few minutes today to update this page:
http://linux-sound.org/ardour-music.html
I've added a variety of new and old pieces, thanks to my ISP's
generosity in expanding my available storage. Please feel free to
comment. :)
More pieces will be added within the next few days. I've been busy...

Hello list,
Since I have installed Gentoo I got some issue with JACK. I am using Jackdmp
When I run qjackctl all is right but the CPU percent, in spite of staying
around 3 or 4% it is moving : 4% then 3 %, then it passes to 27% then 10%
and 53% and 4% ...
I don't understand very well what it is going wrong.
My config : gentoo 64 bits version on a Dell Insprion 9400 Intel Core Duo 2
T7200 with 2 Go Ram.
Firstly I had installed jack 0.109 and the issue was worse that jackdmp
:sometimes CPU load until 80%
The kernel I use was compiled by my own. Perhpas I forgot an option or
something...
uname -a :
2.6.24-rt1 #4 SMP PREEMPT RT Sun Mar 16 21:42:41:CET 2008 x86_64
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
Thank you very much for your help.
Cheers,
Mysth-R
