Hi,
Maybe it's nice to look what this year has brought us when it comes to
good (maybe bad ;) ) Linux audio applications and developments. Some
kind of evaluation of 2009 with conclusion for 2010.
Mmh Let me start, random order:
1) Jack2 has become (very) stable
2) Ardour 2.8.4 is very stable, has LV2 support
3) New graphical LV2 plugins
4) LinuxDSP
5) Openoctave project, which makes Linux Audio more useful also for
pro's. Including the openoctavemidi sequencer.
6) Pulseaudio was a mess, but works better with JACK now
7) Ubuntustudio 9.10 finally an Ubuntu Studio which performs pretty well.
8) LADISH, session handler for Linux Audio. Could be a major
breakthrough for the workflow on Linux.
9) It's able to use Blender with Jack via a patch
10) New Calf plugins
11) Linuxsampler 1.0
12) PHASEX improvements
13) Zynaddsubfx 2.4 and Yoshimi!
14) Adi has joined the Debian Multimedia team and maintains a lot of
packages now! :)
15) Kernels >= *.31 works great for RT even without patch!
16) Lilypond has improved tablature functionality now.
17) Frescobaldi is get smoother and smoother
18 NtEd and Mscore have reach a more mature status as WYIWYG notation
editors
19) At least NtEd and Denemo are having Jack support and are able to add
custom channel, which makes it easy to connect them to Linuxsampler for
example
20) Moore is found alive :)
21) Ardour gets more income and reach the donation minimum (almost)
every month now (with thanks to the community who helped improving the
donation system.
22) Netjack2
...
Wishes:
1) Openoctave teams keeps up the good work
2) Ardour3 release, I hope it is as nice as they say it is.
3) Commercial products like pianoteq starting to use LV2
4) We get an nice Linux Audio session handler (improvements of LADISH
and maybe an non-dbus alternative session handler by Fons et. al. ;) )
5) More widely implementation of JACK midi
6) Maybe a sort Pd for Ardour as they have Max for Ableton Live?
7 Maybe a sort of Ableton Live for Linux (maybe in combi with LADISH)
8) improvements for Zynaddsubfx, maybe as LV2 plugin, GUI improvements?
9) Denemo reach version 1 and that it will be able to have more then one
long bar...
10) More instruments synths
11) Linuxdsp becomes GPL and gathers enough income
12) More people joining the Debian Multimedia Team
13) Mixbus for Linux
14) Video apps, like Blender get JACK support
15) Better plugins infrastructure on Linux (important one atm!)
16) Good LAC2010 in Utrecht NL., with nice presentations
...
Next... :)

Consider it done!
Please allow me to echo what many others have already said so eloquently on the LA* lists:
On behalf of the Linuxaudio.org consortium, L2Ork, and personally I would like to extend very best Holiday wishes to all LA* users, developers, artists, enthusiasts, supporters, contributors, companies, and sponsors. May we have many more years of a thriving community and bountiful creativity.
Likewise, I would like to express deepest gratitude to all who have contributed towards making audio on Linux not only possible but also remarkable! After all, Linuxaudio.org, L2Ork, or many of my personal projects would've never been possible without your talents and generous contributions!

I just wanted to wish everyone a very happy holidays. Whatever part
of the world you are in, whatever holiday you celebrate around this
time of year, I hope that you and your loved ones have a wonderful
time together.
This time of year can also be a challenge for those who have lost
loved ones, who might be struggling in the bad economy, live under
repressive governments. To those who are, my thoughts are with you.
Here's to the close of 2009, and best wishes for the new year.

All,
When choosing another sound from a soundfount such as the one
distributed by Fedora: FuildR3_GM (148398306 bytes) and having
the preview option on, why does Qsynth, from time to time, outputs a
disturbing loud noise instead of the chosen instrument ? This runs on
Fedora 8 x86_64 and I reckon this could be considered as outdated. Was
this bug fixed in recent versions ?
Cheers.
Any general advice for the non-DSP-literate on finding/fixing denormals?
I've been playing around with Beatrix, using an interesting unofficial patch submitted here some years ago, which adds ALSA MIDI and JACK output support. It works, after I added a check for none on's of zero velocity, and for MIDI channel greater than 3. It's a great Hammond simulator, more accurate than AZR-3.
But it has some denormal problems. With no notes playing, it quickly sucks up maximum CPU usage. Looks to me like it isn't running in RT mode either, but I can fix that... once I fix the runaway CPU problem.
But I don't know crap about DSP. Any quick hacks I could use to attempt to trace and locate the source of the problem, or quick fixes to try?
Also, it quickly gets to clipping mode when at maximum volume. I'd like to add a scale for master volume to bring it down a notch. This may be related to the denormal too, so that'd be a second-order problem.
Sadly, due to the Beatrix license, I can't post the few (very minor) patches I've done to get it working, nor can anyone help me by fixing this problem and sending me a patch either.
But it sounds great, and, if I can fix these one or two problems, I will definitely use it live (when playing a venue which lacks a real B3).

jpmidi is offline since a few months.
It's announce mail from 2007:
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.audio.jackit/15870
Is anyone interested in hosting it, or does a
GPL orphanage exist without me knowing?
I still have a tarball.
Just by being potentially useful/instructive open
source code it is IMHO worth occupying a few K
somewhere in the web, though jack-smf-utils
provides a superset of its functionality.
