This might be a dumb question to devs, but from a user's perspective, what's
Vamp, and what does it do?

A quick heads up for those who may be interested.
After my G4 laptop (museum piece) had a large cough and required
brain surgery, i needed to install a new OS, so i'd thought i'd give Debian
5 (Lenny) PPC a try.
Works a treat, 'out of the box', so to speak.
No PPC RT kernel but sound, vid, etc, all installed and ran without any
tweaks or workarounds.
The new LXDE Desktop Environment is rather special, particularly for my old
laptop, and its meagre 512mb ram, and quite a bit more responsive than
heavier offerings. (I ran both Kubuntu, and Ubuntu on the LT before this
using KDE and Gnome respectively)
The kernel is 2.6.26-1, and midi works fine.
I'd be interested to know if Debian 5 works well on 32 or 64 bit PCs, and if
there's an RT option.
The only apps that won't install are Denemo, and Musescore, at the moment.
(Denemo can't find my fluidsynth or Sndfile libs which is no doubt user
error, and Musescore keeps giving me a T1 key error/RTC timer error, and
won't play at all, but it's been doing that on my Linux PPC for a while.)
Thumbs up to the Debian team. Based only on my brief personal observation, i
reckon they've done well.
"Out of the box."

A quick question.
I'm on the road at the moment, and i've had to deal with a broken laptop.
(Which is now fixed, and i'm typing this on a colleague's computer.)
My problem is i have no net access for the laptop, so i'm reinstalling
everything with a constant transfer process with an install disk, and a usb
stick. (And i should say here i've installed Debian Lenny ppc, which worked
out of the box with no problems. Thanks to the debian team!)
My colleagues computer is Windows, so i don't want to install anything on
it, for fear of messing it up, or introducing, however unwittingly a virus,
or bug of some sort.
Is it possible to simply download (Save as..., for instance) from an up to
date cvs or svn build, to an isolated download file, then transfer the files
to my usb stick, without using CVS or SVN to do so?
I've got most things re-installed, but a couple of apps, and updates that
have been highly useful for me, are only available at the moment through
CVS, SVN, or Git.

Hi
MusE is the center of my setup but unfortunately the current ubuntu binary
refuses to load any of my old *.meds, prefering to crash instead (0.8.1). I decided to
try and build a newer MusE from source but I've had no luck there either.
uic from qt3 just segfaults when used. ie:
/usr/share/qt3/bin/uic -L ../../muse/widgets -o organguibase.cpp -impl organguibase.h organguibase.ui
make[5]: *** [organguibase.lo] Segmentation fault
I've tried v0.9 and 1.0rc1 to the same effect.
a backtrace reveals little (to me):

some kind of thread sync error maybe.
Has anyone managed to build MusE on intrepid?
pete.
I checked on the archives and the ALSA site and couldn't find anything
on this. Does the Tascam US-1641 run under Linux/ALSA? It looks like a
good deal for the money.

So I've been doing some more testing and I think this must be a timer
issue. The logic is that when I record my voice, the timing looks
strange - a 10 second recording will be shown as 5 seconds (and played
back that way).
Can anyone point me towards a good explanation of ALSA timers and how
to configure them? I have been looking around but can't find one.

Hi
This isn't specifically linux related but maybe I can catch a break. Having recently upgraded some
of my gear I've been trying to put the pieces together in order to do some serious audio work.
In the process I've noticed some strange (to me) interference problems. As a guitar/bass
player, I'm familiar with the kinds of noise you get from proximity to electronic equipment but I don't
recall ever hearing snaps and pops and crackling sounds when I touch metal components
(the mixer case for example) or the strings. If I put my feet on the floor, the effect is intensified too.
I've also noticed that if I connect an RCA cable to my amp input but don't connect the other end, I hear a very loud
buzzing sound. Louder than anything recall hearing previously. I've tried using things individually and together
but I still have the problem. Does anyone know of an online resource useful for resolving this kind of problem or even
some practical suggestions?
At the moment the most I can think to do is to move it all to another location to potentially rule out some
local weirdness with the mains electricity. (it's a fairly old house with a seemingly deranged circuit setup)
It may just be that it took the introduction of better quality gear for me to hear the effects above the usual
din but then these static like snapping noises are very distinct.
cheers,
pete.
Hi.
I'm in the process of setting up a 64 bit Archlinux system and I'm
stumped by a problem with playback on my FP10.
* I can start jackd.
* The light on the FP10 turns blue.
* In qjackctl I can see programs (mplayer, ardour, etc.) making
connections to the default output pair.
* I can record in ardour and hear analog inputs being played back
through the monitors.
Everything seems perfect aside from not beight able to get any sound
from the PC ;-(
Has anyone else experienced this kind of thing? Have I missed
something obvious? I would really appreciate some help at this point.
FFADO version is 1.999.41-1518
jack is jackdmp 1.90
Regards,
Jesse
What are the current recommendations and "avoids" in motherboards and
graphics cards these days?
I'm currently using a Sempron 3400 with a completely shite Via
motherboard (slow, buggy onboard sound, slow, buggy onboard network,
pathetically slow onboard video since my NVidia card failed). Are there
any particular chipsets to go for?
