Hey, list,
So, I'm in the market for monitors with a budget of approx $1000 (CAD in
my case) and I've been trying to do my homework about the better known
models and brands in the last couple of days, mainly thanks to SOS's
excellent series of reviews. I need small monitors, both because the
room I work in is small accoustically, and because my actual space
real-estate is very limited. Anyway, it suddenly occured to me to ask on
this list what my fellow Linux Users are favouring these days.
Cheers,
S.M.

Hi,
could there be any disadvantages for averaged desktop users, server
usage etc., if the kernel 2.6.39 is build as PREEMPT kernel?
Today I installed the kernel from the repositories of a major Distro:
$ uname -a
Linux debian 2.6.39-2-amd64 #1 SMP Wed Jun 8 11:01:04 UTC 2011 x86_64
GNU/Linux
Some time ago I build the kernel myself:
$ uname -a
Linux debian 2.6.39.1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Jun 7 01:40:05 CEST 2011 x86_64
GNU/Linux
I'm asking, because I want to know, if it would be reasonable to appeal,
that major distros should build it as PREEMPT kernel.
Regards,
Ralf

Hi Ralf,
My understanding that there would probably be not much differences for desktop
users. However (most) server users would not want a pre-emptively built as they
generally require to share their services whereas pre-emption can cause delays on
some services...
FWIW - this is only my limited understanding.. I have a pre-emptive kernel on my
general purpose laptop.. On my home server I have no latency on low value kernel
timer.. .
I recommend either building your own kernel (fairly easy, especially if you save
your config from previous builds).. Or getting a pre-built audio purpose kernel..
cheers
Allan

While it's a bit late .. The Yamaha MSP-5's are good in that range too.. Watch
out for the M-Audios.. the bass tends to be over inflated and kills out some of
the mids. ....
Dear all,
Skipped a couple of months in order to get ready for LAC2011. But now
that LAC2011 is over I can pick up the monthly round-ups again. I'm not
going to cover the months that I skipped so I'll move on with what
happened last month, the month of May.

As per subject. This is hard to trace for me because they are put in a
"spam" folder in the webmail interface which I hardly ever use.
One of thes is e.g: linux-audio-user(a)lists.linuxaudio.org
ISP says this is correctly marked as spam because it doesn't have
"standard features routing / resolution / related to domain" (I'm
translating this from Italian. And in a further email that they check
"correct routing of the sender in relation to DNS domain and not only
reverse etc." (again my translation).
Any mail-admin guru have an idea about this?
Of course it would help if they simply had an option to whitelist
addresses ("this is not spam") or something similar which they seem not
to have.
Lorenzo.
Sorry, I didn't see, that this wasn't sent to the list...

Hello everyone!
Thank you all for the wonderful help. It's done. Don't ask me, what finally
put it right. We approached it somewhat sideways and edge-wards and had some
improvements along the way. Perhaps it really was a reboot after all the
reconfiguring and restarting of the network service and whatever else. The main
thing is, LinuxSampler is now reachable and the msuci can begin. I know a very
happy chap making love to his gigatron. He also says: THANKS!
Warm regards
Julien

Hello Everyone!
It's not strictly LAu, but I think enough of it. Besides: I'm despearte.
I've tried everything and anything.
So I'm running a Debian Squeeze - just installed yesterday - and it has UDEV
(feel the killer knives and guns sliding out? :-( ).
I dont seem to get a /dev/pts/0 anymore. There's only one file in there,
which is called ptx and has the file rights c--------
I compared with my own home system and can only find one major difference: I
managed to uninstall udev, which I can't do here. I mount /dev/pts correctly
from /etc/fstab with:
devpts /dev/pts devpts rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=620 0 0
I mount udev correctly and I didn't change any of the rules.
I googled such things, but all the answers I found had different causes.
Causes, that I could eliminate.
Please someone help me or I'll kill that machine. :-(
Warm regards
Julien

Hello,
Let me explain my situation. I have M-Audio Delta 1010LT and Line 6 POD
X3 Pro. I've tried to use S/PDIF to connect those two devices, Delta
being the master, POD the slave. Later I discovered [1]. Beside M-Audio
Delta 1010 (without LT), is there any other card that can be word clock
master, receive S/PDIF input and have similar (number of) connectors
like Delta? In other words, is Delta 1010 my only choice for Linux
machine? Thanx!
