For music playing back I use a player which uses gstreamer as an engine. The player uses an appropriate gst API for setting (software) volume level. Almost all content in my music collection is 16 bit depth. gst forwards a stream to hdsp alsa driver, and then card's spdif out is used to transfer a stream to external DAC, which is set to accept 24 bit stream in accordance with card's bit depth format. DAC chip itself has 20 bit word length (PCM63).
The question is, does gst attenuate samples after converting them into format with more rather 16 bit? The thing is, I'd be happy to know I have those 24 db (at least theoretically, 20 bit DAC - 16 bit content = 4 bit = 24 db) at which I can reduce level in a player without loosing bits.

Hi all,
I've managed to install Ubuntustudio 10.10 on my Macbook pro. When I tried
to work on Ardour I got terrible distortion.
So I tried to see where it comes from. Checked the master, OK. Checked the
Sound card (gnome alsa mixer), also good.
I thought I'll try some different settings within Jack, so I set the "Force
16 bit" parameter in Jack, while Ardour is still set to "Sample Format"=32
bit floating point.
Now the distortion is gone but I don't know if it was the right thing to do.
Anyone knows why this helped me? And more than this, did I do the right
thing or have I done something really stupid...
Appreciate your opinions,
Moshe
Hi
Deep in another thread I jut learned about the WeTab
(http://wetab.mobi/en/). This made me wonder if there are tablets out
there that would be a viable alternative to something like the lemur
(http://www.jazzmutant.com/lemur_overview.php).
For instance, is there a tablet that will run pd and let me multi-touch
interact with it? Anyone actually experimented with something along
those lines?

hi *!
i'm looking for some wireless controller box with the following features:
* sends and receives generic midi data
* has at least one fader, preferrably motorized
* has some freely definable knobs with sane midi output (no NRPN weirdness)
* works with ALSA ootb (if it's a USB device), or:
* has midi in and out ports on the base station
something like the frontier design tranzport, but without the driver
pain and with a fader tacked on.
thanks in advance,
jörn

While this was not unexpected, we're all very sad to see him go.
I'm doubt that his family has any idea what he meant to us. If anyone has an idea on how we can show our appreciation, please share it.

Could someone guide me to an iso file for a working music liveCD which includes a working version of Ceres3. I need to create an AudioSculpt partial tracking file from a sound file, so could use Sculpttool instead but it needs to be on liveCD or simple to install. Why doesn't IRCAM allow any free access to analysis tools like superVP? Anyway, if not, any ideas?

So, the "rt patch emulation" ex kernel 2.6.39 might be less good than a
kernel that is patched?
Until now I build
linux-image-2.6.33.9-rt31_2.6.33.9-rt31-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb
linux-image-2.6.39.1_2.6.39.1-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb
but I only produced music with 2.6.33.9-rt31 until now, dunno if 2.6.39
isn't as good as a kernel-rt.
Any information, experiences?

Hi,
Does anyone know of a program/plugin that can change the bit depth of an
audio stream in real time. So for example, you could feed the output of a
synth into it and have it come out at 8-bit.
Thanks
