Does anyone know if USB DACs use any sort of internal buffer or if the
data they receive is converted the moment it is received? Does this
behavior change depending on whether the DAC operates in synchronous
or asynchronous mode?

Any SC experts out there ?
I'm trying to install SuperCollider (from the AUR package) and get
the following rather uniformative error:
fons@c252:~> sclang
init_OSC
compiling class library..
NumPrimitives = 532
pass 1 done
ERROR: There is a discrepancy.
numClassDeps 0 gNumClasses 80
That's without any ~/.sclang.cfg or ~/.sclang.sc.
Strange thing is I did exactly the same yesterday evening on another
system, using the same package, and everything works fine there.
Anyt help appreciated !

"ExpressCard" is a little bit confusing. From hearsay just because
something is good as a PCI or PCIe version, there should be no guarantee
that a PCI-X version is good too. But I've got no knowledge, it's just
hearsay regarding to IO cards in general.

The card is a Digitus DS-31201-1:
http://www.digitus.info/en/products/archiv/digitus-firewire-800-expresscard/
Careful! Take note of the -1 at the end (not shown on the website)
because there's also a similar card of the same brand with same part
number but -2 at the end. It has a VIA chipset, which some report to
also work well but for which I also had bad reports from people I've
talked to (who by the way are not on linux).
I'll send you in private the link to the shop in Rome which I got it
from and still seems to have it.
Lorenzo.

Hi LaUsers!
a new free software is born: IceStream -
https://sourceforge.net/projects/icestream/
it's a beta version, we are writing the known bugs & todo, some parts
are in french but it is already possible to use it to mix audio
streaming, to start an icecast from gui and the to send an audio
stream to it or elsewhere. Thanks to mplayer, ices, icecast, vorbis
and jack.
It works with jackd server and use only ogg for the moment (we don't
use mp3 anyway here).
Of course, we are looking for beta-tester and more people are also
welcome to help, support, develop and more if you want!!
mailing list on its way and forum already in place :
https://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/icestream/
bug tracker to come ;-)
cheers

APO33
space of research and experimentation

info(a)apo33.org
I am pleased to announce the release of Composite 0.006.1. This is a
bug-fix release.
ABOUT
-----
Composite is (or, will be) a software application/system for
real-time, in-performance sequencing, sampling, and looping.
Currently the main feature is the LV2 Sampler that supports Hydrogen
drumkits.
CHANGES
-------
* Fix FTBFS: t_AudioPort test missing link to QtCore
* Fix FTBFS Song.cpp: Replace using of QString(int) with
QString(const char*)
* LV2 Sampler: Initialize QCoreApplication
* LV2 Sampler: Fix crash by moving Logger instance to module level
* LV2 Sampler: Check LV2 Event types and add extension meta-data
* tests: t_AudioPort had a degenerate test
* tests: t_SeqScript now passes (was failing as dev reminder)
* Replace -lQtCore with ${QT_LIBRARIES} in build system
STATUS
------
Composite is a project with a large vision. Here is the status of the
different components:
composite-gui: Alpha (i.e. "a broken version of Hydrogen")
compoiste_sampler (LV2): production/stable, no GUI
libTritium: Not a public API, yet.
LINKS
-----
Composite: http://gabe.is-a-geek.org/composite/
Plugin Docs:
file:///home/gabriel/code/composite-planning/plugins/sampler/1
Tarball:
http://gabe.is-a-geek.org/composite/releases/composite-0.006.tar.bz2
Git: http://gitorious.org/compositegit://gitorious.org/composite/composite.git
HOW TO USE THE PLUGIN
---------------------
To use the plugin, you need the following:
* A program (host) that loads LV2 plugins.
* A MIDI controller.
* An audio output device. :-)
The following LV2 hosts are known to work with this plugin:
Ingen http://drobilla.net/blog/software/ingen/
ardour3 (alpha) http://ardour.org/
lv2_jack_host http://drobilla.net/software/slv2/
zynjacku http://home.gna.org/zynjacku/
If you don't have a hardware MIDI controller, I suggest using
jack-keyboard (http://jack-keyboard.sourceforge.net/).
The first time you run the sampler, it will create a file
~/.composite/data/presets/default.xml, which will set up presets on
Bank 0 for the two default drum kits (GMkit and TR808EmulationKit).
Sending MIDI PC 0 and PC 1 will switch between the two kits. See
composite_sampler(1) for more information on setting up presets.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
---------------
With this release, I would especially like to thank:
Alessio Treglia - For dutifully reporting bugs, submitting
patches, and *patiently* waiting for me to review them.
Paul Davis - For working with me on the crashes that were
discovered on ardour3 alpha.
Peace,
Gabriel M. Beddingfield
Hi list.
I have generally been using the onboard sound on my laptop, which has generally been OK on Doze using ASIO4All but due to heavy use the socket is becoming intermittent and I've discovered that with Linux (various distros all the same) that it is incredibly hissy and noisy (coming and going sa thing happen life hard drive or CD spin up.)
Anyway I have given up trying to remove that unbearable noise and think it's time to get an external audio interface anyway.
My idea choice would be the RMA Multiface II with ExtraCard asapter but don't think I can warrant spending £780 when I wont use many of its functions a lot of the time.
More budget choice is the Indigo IOx, although I know I will miss having 2x stereo out if I ever want to do a DJ set at £150 it makes a lot more sense for an everyday use card I can carry around with the laptop.
So how well do the Echo Indigo cards work with Linux? Current distro of choice is Fedora 15 (without the CCRMA core as it breaks my computer.)
Thanks. Dale.
Hello everyone,
I'm considering the opportunity to improve my home linux studio based
buying this laptop http://www.garlach44.eu/it/notebook-galway-15-pollici
(from a small italian company) with Ubuntu pre-installed (No Microsoft
licenses to pay!!).
This machine has an express card 54 slot.
I'd like to use a firewire sound card (echo audiofire 8) so i should buy
a firewire express card 54 adaptor.
Does anybody use it & could tell me if it works properly ?
Can you suggest me some models ?
Thanks in advance
Nicola
