I'm still exploring my new USB interface (Presonus audiobox usb). In
the manual it says that it has a bit depth of 24 and internal
frequency selectors for 44.1 and 48.
Now, if I have an app like audacity set to 48K does it (or jack?) send
a message to the box to enable 48 (or 44.1)? If that is the case, I
assume that using 44.1 or 48 should have the identical latency issues?
48K should send a bit more data back to the computer?
I did another test recording this evening. No xruns. I think that
fixing ulimit so that jack can allocate memory fixed the problem.

Hello Q!
I don't think this problem is related to a config file on a home partition.
I someties get the same issue with a few of my soundcard channels. I have got
an MAudio Delta 1010 LT.
The relevant config for this should still be asound.state (or similar) in
the /etc directory (I know the exact name has changed with more recent ALSA
versions).
I first noticed that problem, when experimenting with suspend to disk. I'm
not sure, if that was the reason for it starting or if it just conincided with
some minor bug in the ALSA version of that time.
Sorry, that I can't be of more help.
Warm regards
Julien

Hi
I've been experiencing a bit of weirdness with my soundcard for quite a
while now, maybe as much as a year.
Often, but not always, when I start my machine I'll only get sound from
the left channel. I found that I need to open the control software (used
to be Envy24 until I upgraded to Ubuntu Studio 12.04 last year, it's
been Mudita since then) and play with the analogue volume control.
Both left and right volume controls are set on maximum, but as soon as I
move the right-hand one (down and back up to max) I get stereo sound
again. I swapped the card for another one and that didn't solve it.
I have a permanent /home and my OS on a separate partition -- could this
be caused by a config file somewhere on /home and if so, where might I
find it to sort this problem out?
Thanks in advance
Q
Hi Julien,
it's not an answer to your question, but already an assumption, since
QjackCtl only provides to show aliases for Jack clients, I guess there
are no aliases for ALSA MIDI devices.
If aliases should be available, it would be interesting for me too,
because 2 of my MIDI interfaces share the same name.
Card 1: TerraTec EWX24/96 at 0xbf00, irq 20
Card 2: TerraTec EWX24/96 at 0xbb00, irq 21
The different IRQs and card numbers aren't helpful for auto connecting
MIDI, at least not in the ways I did it until now.
Regards,
Ralf
Is there any advantage in using a 64 bit distro for audio? Do the
advantages outweigh the difficulties?
I'm expecting a new computer to be delivered today and am trying to decide
what to install...
Thx,
James

For me Schönberg or e.g. India music doesn't sound atonal.

Music as medicine
Medicine can heal you, but also can make you sick. You need the right
medicine at the right time.
Old school Rock'n'Roll
Listen to the original music copied by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. It's
not my kind of music, but The Brian Setzer Orchestra already is good,
however, if you want it more musical, take the time and really listen to
the originals.
I more and more win the impression that here's too much bias regarding
to what we call "U" and "E" music in Germany. Extraordinary abilities
seem to be more important, than the heart.
Not kidding, music battles, not by email, really, on the stage, become
more and more hip in some scenes. There really are contests!
For me this is the opposite of music. For music means playing together.
I don't dislike Dieter Bohlen, regarding to his limited abilities, I
dislike him regarding to the way he does misuse his abilities. I could
say the same for some very gifted musician. Extraordinary abilities are
a nice feature, but not needed to make nice music.

But that is important!
Because we talked that much about money, an easy to understand example.
There are rich people and some poor people are unhappy because there are
some rich people.
To become happy the first way to go, is o find out what _you_ and not
_somebody_ else wants.
If you want to be rich yourself, you simply don't like rich people,
because you are envious, you won't become happy, when all the rich
people become poor too.
In this case you shouldn't fight against the rich, but find a way to
become rich yourself.
If you are unhappy regarding to empathy, because you think that the
universe isn't a strawberry field, but a hard, unfair place, you'll not
become happy if you become rich too, you need to work for a fair and
lovely world.
It's not important to become rich, if you want to become rich, it's not
important to get a perfect world, if you want to get a perfect world.
It's just important to go the way that's close to what you want, this
will make you happy.
So what kind of copyright or copyleft does provide the most freedom for
everybody, to go the way that makes happy?
The only important thing is exactly this freedom.

If people like a band, they will find a way to give them money, so that
this band can record more songs for the fans. Real musicians have fans
that like to pay for the music. Piracy only is an issue for the most
worse and hyped music from the top 40, since it's an artificial
situation, no fan expect that one of those day flies will stay for very
long, soon or later there will be the next fashion. I won't imagine what
will come next, after this loudness and auto-tune fashion. Without heavy
rotation nobody would like the crap they call music.
I for sure had nearly all Beatles recordings as illegal copies on tapes,
but I also bought all of this recordings, without expecting that the
Beatles ever will record a new song.
I never owned music from The Black Eyed Peas as illegal copy or bought
recording. They sell an entertainment product, that has less to do with
an intellectual property. It's based on an exhausted fashion.
The current copyright is a dying concept, because it's completely
outdated, it's from another time. Major record labels, computer
companies search for new ways to rip off customers by getting as much
monopolies as possible. The idea of the outdated copyright was not to
protect monopolies. Monopolies aren't allowed.
The artist from the neighborhood still has some advantages by IP laws,
but the complete package of laws is a pack of disadvantages and only
good for a few big moneymakers.
Unfortunately most humans can't share, most humans need enemy images
etc..
All the 80s European DIY movement Punks, such as Crass didn't become
rich, but they still are able to live. There's no need to be rich.
I feel bad for people who are unable to walk in shoes with wholes in the
sole. There's nothing bad with having money, but it's no problem to live
with less money.
I've got the impression this discussion about IP, copyright is about
money, money, money. What's about freedom, sharing knowledge etc.?
