Variations for solo sequenced piano :

This piece is a through-composed set of variations on an 8-note theme.
It's 32+ minutes long, not strictly tonal but not 12-tone either.
Probably not easy listening, so feel free to skip it if your tastes tend
more towards Yanni than to Cecil Taylor.
It's not currently wholly playable by a soloist. It's also not
completely polished, this version is a second draft uploaded for
comments. Notation to follow sometime next year.

Nice composition, odd playing, IMO the playing is to statically. Some
parts remind me of Zappa's "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary". I'm
still listening, didn't hear the whole piece yet. Until now, around 7
minutes I like it.

Ok, I'm short in time now, I would continue listening if I would have
more time yet, but IMO some notes are played with to less emotions, very
technically, less dynamic range. IMO still a nice composition, good
audio quality too, but consider to play it again or ask a friend who is
a good piano player, to play it for you. I dislike the way it's played.

Strange, eclectic... but I like it. A mixture of dodecaphonism, avant-gard,
and some passages more easy listening classical piano.
I'm curious about composition; this is something you wanted to achieve as
it is (20 mins with some guiding thread or idea behind), or they are
various fragments that you arranged as a whole?
Also interested about instruments and programs you used.

It's a planned composition, as much as you can plan this sort of thing,
and the length was indeed a part of the plan. It's not an assembly of
fragments though, there's a guide through it all. The opening motto is
recycled continuously, with very free treatment, appropriate to the form
(variations).
There are numerous quotes in the piece too. Did you spot any ?
Also interested about instruments and programs you
used.
QSynth with 8mbgmsfx.sf2 soundfont, Calf reverb. Sequenced with a DOS
sequencer in DOSemu, recorded with ecasound, trimmed in mhWaveEdit.
That's it, a very simple setup for MIDI composition under Linux.

This is a great peice!
If you're looking for comments, I'd say use a better piano sample, something that
sounds more like a real piano and less like a digital sample. And with good stereo
panning. Also place it in a room instead of a digital reverb, maybe in a convolution of a
concert hall (I like the Pori samples). And I also think it'd be improved a lot by
adding velocity! Dynamics. Nothing sounds more like digital sampling than all the notes at
constant velocity. It's also wearying to listen to without dynNAMics,
knowwhatI'msayin?
With that, I think it'd sound like an actual performance.

Yep, that's the critique I've heard most, that the piece is okay but the
sound really needs improvement. Time to find my Pianoteq plugin. :)
Velocities are there - somewhat - and more prominently in some places
than in others. Obviously I didn't take the time to polish each section,
and I agree, the lack of more subtle dynamic contrasts tires the ear.
With that, I think it'd sound like an actual
performance.
The next release will have improved sound quality. I'll experiment with
some different sample sets, and I'm open to suggestions re: preferred
piano sets. I'll look for those Pori samples you mentioned too.
