Hello!
I recently got myself an internal PCIe card, a ESI Juli@ XTe. It uses the
ice1724 chipset, and I'm really happy with it.
However, I cannot seem to get the S/PDIF in working. In JACK, 2 entries of
the card shows up. One that says hw0,Juli, and one that says hw1,Juli, and
also is noted as IEC958.
My analogue ins and outs work fine, but only 2 ins show up in JACK, even
though I'd imagine I'd get one more for my S/PDIF in.
Does anyone have experience with this? I have all sorts of options in
alsamixer/qasmixer (GUI-mixer I use), but I just can't wrap my head around
it. It just won't work.
If I use hw1,Juli as the device for JACK, it usually just crashes and
there's no real difference.
Any ideas here?

S/PDIF on these cards is only two channels in/out. These are not ADAT
connections.

I may have miss read that. S/PDIF is stereo in and out, however, will not
be available at the same time as your analog ports, it's one or the other.
You might have luck controlling this device with the Envy24Controller app,
it is available in most distros app repositories.

That is my guess too, though it is not a limitation of the HW.
You might have luck controlling this device with the

The via/ice1712 and the 172* are different chips. As far as I know the
Envy24Controller or mudita24 are for the 1712 only. While all the 1712
cards can generally be controlled the same way, 172* need more glue
circuitry and there are often greater differences from one card to the
next using the same chip.

S/PDIF on these cards is only two channels in/out. These are not ADAT

Yes but the OP at least should get the 2 analog and the 2 SPDIF
channels, assumed the card is capable of using analog and SPDIF at the
same time ;).
Is the driver for this card ok?
For my ICE1712

stereo cards jack does show 12 capture and 10 playback channels.

If you want to use the S/PDIF input tell jack to use hw:Juli,1

(You may be able to use device combining if the card lets you clock
everything together.)

If possible, I'd love to use both analogue and S/PDIF ins at the same time,
but I can live with having to restart JACK and switch if necessary.
I'm pretty sure the card should let me clock everything together, so how
would I do the device combining?

Those should all be outputs... there is a little microphone icon at the
bottom that should show the inputs when clicked. From what you have there
it looks like you can monitor all 4 inputs... stereo analog and stereo
s/pdif. This doesn't mean anything so far as where your inputs are.
Looking at the block diagram of the 1724, the output mixing is internal
and apart from the pci IF. The good thing being that in order to be able
to mix them like that they should be in sync. You should be able to move
an input from spdif left to spdif right to line left to line right and get
sound out without touching anything on your mixer... this is still not
inputs into the computer, just direct monitor.
QAS should let you see inputs as well as outputs at the same time.

I don't quite get what you mean, sorry. Could you perhaps elaborate a
little (read: explain to me like I'm 5 years old ;) ). Thanks a ton for
trying!

What I've tried (with no success):
* Setting the hw:Juli,1 as input (to access the S/PDIF in that way) and
hw:Juli,0 as output (to still output through my speakers in JACK)
* Using zita-j2a -d hw:Juli,1 which proved to only give access to the
outputs
* Using zita-a2j -d hw:Juli,1 which seems to not be able to start
synchronization (it just keeps spamming "Starting synchronization." in the
terminal)
This really proved to be a rather difficult issue for me.... :(
