Hi all :)
any recommendations for a distro?
It shouldn't ignore settings in xorg.conf.
It shouldn't use PulseAudio, or if it does use PulseAudio, then at least
it should be enough, if the user set up /usr/share/alsa/cards to be able
to use his audio card(s).
Not that important, but an advantage if this should work too, at least
the 32-bit version should be able to work with common proprietary 32-bit
apps such as lightscribe apps.
Less important are audio and MIDI repositories and kernel-rt, I will
build several apps and the kernel myself, but the environment to do this
should cause less or no issues.
For Suse I experienced that 32-bit apps as lightscribe are ok on a
64-bit install, but Suse has several disadvantages for my palate.
For Ubuntu I experienced that it has less to do with Linux anymore, the
reason why I'll switch to another distro. Don't get me wrong, I still
make only good experiences when using the Ubuntu Studio repositories,
but this isn't a help when the Ubuntu desktop is slow, the mouse doesn't
work properly, etc..
I've got a absolutely stable and MIDI jitter free Ubuntu MIDI and audio
worksattion, regarding to audio apps, but it was very time consuming to
set it up and until now even the mouse wheel isn't working. The same
mouse does work with Suse OOTB.
At the moment I still try to fix an Ubuntu Studio Natty install, but I
won't waste my time any longer.
Anyway, I prefer a .deb distro to a .rpm distro, but this isn't that
important. A distro where it's easy to get rid of PA without cheap
tricks would be cool.
Important is that I prefer PCI, PCIe, parallel port PS/2 to USB gear.
My favorite distro was 64 Studio.
I'll try to keep Ubuntu, as my distro, just for emergency cases I'm
looking for another distro. At the moment there are Suse 11.2 64-bit,
Edubuntu + Ubuntu Studio packages Maverick 32-bit and Ubuntu Studio +
Edubuntu packages Natty 64-bit on my machine installed. I prefer using
GNOME2.
My machine:

NVIDIA 7200 GS (I could switch to an on-board ATI Radeon X1250-based
graphics, if this would be better when using a new distro)
4 GB RAM
SATA drives only
2 TerraTec EWX 24/96 (UPS didn't deliver a RME HDSPe AIO + ADAT device
last week, I should get it on Monday, but I'll keep the TerraTec cards
for MIDI)

The nvidia-173xx and nvidia-96xx driver packages have been
removed from our repositories as they are incompatible with
newer xorg servers. This can only be fixed by an upstream
update, which has not happened yet.
For most video cards, the best alternative should be
xf86-video-nouveau; see:

As lower-grade options, you might also consider xf86-video-nv
and xf86-video-vesa: simply remove the old nvidia driver(s),
install these, and the xorg

On Ubuntu I'm using the proprietary driver and the old FLOSS nv,
I removed nouveau.
Btw. at startup I'm switching my xorg.conf regarding to the
kernel by

new cards that aren't supported either. In response I've learned to
poke around the NVidia website to determine what alpha/beta driver I
needed to run to get it to work. Here's where I went to find the
driver that current supports the chipset you mentioned:

Maybe extra/nvidia 270.41.19-1 (the updated one), nouveau or even
nouveau-git would be better for your video card.

coders who are able to use it, but not for me :).
The 7200 / 7300 seems not to support CUDA, but some cards that
second-hand cost less money seems to support it. it's understandable
that you like it.

OK, I understand but personally I wouldn't worry about it. There is
great support at NVidia for Linux and they're not going to drop that
just because a new version of X came out. NVidia CUDA is huge in
finance, 3D design, medical, etc., and a lot/most of that is Linux. If
the newest versions of X are having trouble then that will get worked
out quickly. On Gentoo I'm using xorg-server-1.9.5 with no problems
using 270.41.19. I see xorg-server-1.10.5 in portage but it's still
marked as testing so I haven't bothered with it.
Being that there are no recent real-time kernels I think the use of
NVidia isn't as much of a problem as it used to be years ago.
Personally I don't need the real-time kernel anymore. The standard
kernel is fast enough for my needs. (Sub-5mS) Being that NVidia works
well with the standard kernel I'm pretty happy here. I suspect that
properly setup your 7200GT will work fine. (I.e. - do whatever it was
designed to do.)

I got interested a year ago about Ubuntu, tried it on an old Mac Mini
I had here, and within about 2 days just junked it. The idea that
maintenance is a sudo operation was really tiresome to me. It felt
like Microsoft getting in the way of Linux. Someone else deciding how
I should run my hardware.
I don't mention Gentoo anymore as I've been here for years using it
but I treasure this distro. Yeah, lots of code building which is slow
on older machines, possibly hard(er) to learn for folks new to Linux,
but GREAT documentation and for the most part very few real problems.
The idea of an X driver being removed is a standard problem, but
Gentoo supports you creating your own overlay which allows you to keep
what you need forever.
I understand Arch is like Gentoo, but more binary and friendlier. I
just couldn't get through the documentation a few years ago to really
get into trying it. Maybe it's better now.
Oh yeah, only 1 CD required for Gentoo. None actually if you have a
running Linux box and some disk space as you can install the whole
thing in a running chroot using any Linux environment like Fedora or a
live disc like Knoppix.

Right now I'm a little bit pissed off about Debian. I installed the
'Standard System utilities' by the net install CD. Booted into tty1,
logged in as root and tried to run pppoeconf, but it isn't installed. No

reboot ...
Aha, after editing grub.cfg the way I edited it for Ubuntu, the screen
resolution is ok and the frequency is @ 89.9Hz. Perhaps it was broken by
random, perhaps caused by a bad grub.cfg. Anyway, at least the "submenu"

Time to get off-line and to install Debian ... I hope
PPPoE won't force
me to download 8 DVDs. I'll now try the net-install.
Consider aptosid if you want almost-pure debian with someone looking over the
latest changes to sid and applying fixes/warnings if needed. It is the re-named
sidux, and they were the core of the kannotix team before that, so they have
been maintaining a good rolling distribution for a long time now and tend to be
mirrored in a lot of big mirrors. Xfce or KDE, 64 or 32 bit versions.
The multimedia maintainers for debian have been very active, and that work is
mostly in sid rather than squeeze (which is from about 9 months ago now, and
will be the stable version for the next two years).

Just for reference, I use the same version of the nvidia-drivers on
xorg-server 1.10.2 without any problems. Had to patch the
nvidia-drivers to work with the realtime kernel (because of some
syntax changes), but once the next realtime kernel version is out, it
should be back to normal.

Arch caveats:
- Stuff breaks. I recently had to revert gedit to pre v3 so that I
could continue using it with Supercollider - this involved using a

You're right, mark! AUR is great, but not officially supported and you
have to build from source.
We are working on cool convinient binary repositories, with some kind
of integration between packages. Things like 'pacman -S lv2-plugins'
to install all lv2-* plugins, or 'pacman -S pd-externals' to install
all pd ibs etc..

Other alternatives matching [most of] your criteria would be Arch and
maybe gentoo.
BTW vanilla 2.6.39 includes the relevant RT patches for pro-audio,
although there is no official package, yet. Meanwhile the OpenDAW kernel
does work on 64bit debian systems:

Anyway, choosing a distro for *Desktop use* is quite a personal thingy
and a matter of taste. Give it at least a week after install, else you
can't tell if it sucks or if it is just different from what you are used

Alas, I have no experience with PPPoE since over 15 years. I cancled my
contract with the German Telecom when they were refusing to provide
details on their PPPoE login mechanism [for Linux] and never looked
back. In fact I was so upset that I set up a PPP provider

If that won't boot your machine, deal with your connection etc then aptosid
install disks (a single cd) have recognised new/wierd motherboards etc when most
others failed for me in the past, giving me a working system with a good manual
and clear guides as to which bits of non-free stuff you may need to download to
deal with various its of hardware. I think a lot of their stuff ends up upstream
in debian soon enough.

six months before that. It will be another 2 years till the next update.
Stable is very stable, which is exactly how it should be, and if what you
want is in stable - great. But for example the Pd stuff you mention won't
move in to stable until 2013, till then its in sid, and maybe backports to
squeeze.
Just use testing/wheezy, there's no need to face with the unstable release
bugs or with the "vintage" stability when you have the mid choice. IMHO

I wonder if Paul knows that someone is packaging an alpha version of
ardour3...
that is exactly what alpha versions are for - to prepare for the releases, to
find issues, to get bugs ironed out before a release.
And that is what experimental is for .. to test things that you may want to
release before putting them into sid and making them available to the general
debian user who does not specifically seek out an alpha version to test. That is
why it has appeared occasionally, and why that was mentioned on debian
multimedia maintainers lists, especially as the whole jack2 jack1 system was
being put in place.
That kind of approach is very appropriate - it means it gets built on a wide
variety of architectures and is tested against the various jack versions
available and the whole selection of related apps and libraries that are in the
repo. It sure beats releasing a package into sid and fixing the packaging bugs next.

FWIW after a second trial rebooting from Debian to Ubuntu Natty didn't

I kept Suse 11.2 and Ubuntu Maverick only.
Then I installed Natty.
I'll keep those and additionally install Debian, I hope that Debian
stable isn't outdated, http://packages.debian.org/stable/ ...
If it shouldn't be outdated, I'll install it and stop setting up Natty
immediately.

can have =). This is great for stability (as the name implies), but
don't expect to see some new software for maybe up to a year or 2. If
you really have to have the latest there'll be stability sacrifices to
make, but something like Arch (which I use) is great. More maintenance
needed though, especially if you update close to daily. Once you've
got a good system going it makes sense to only update when you don't
have a big project coming up.

what else can we remove?" Eventually, the GNOME desktop will consist of one

I don't use it, but it seems the current efforts in gnome are geared towards the
handheld rather than desktop. which would make sense to me ... xfce or one of
the other choices for a lightweight desktop, kde if you like that sort of thing
and gnome for tiny displays and handhelds.

I assume that it wouldn't, that would be the whole point. The description seems

It may well be a fools chase and bound to fail, or they may make something good,
in any case it seems that it is the touch interface that is the target for
gnome, though I guess that may change.
And to quibble, iOS is a darwin GUI, so is certainly also *nix, though just as
certainly mach rather than linux, while android is a linux GUI, though I
understand that google and the rest of the kernel developers have parted company
and the maintenance of the google code was taken out of the main linux kernel,
then the code was too ... it is still at least a fork of linux, and not far from
it yet.
At least in its OSX version darwin is actually certified unix I believe, so no *
needed there.
How open/free/locked etc those systems may or may not be is another question
altogether, which may have more than a little bit to do with why they are the
ones preferred by companies selling phones, and is certainly the reason I'd like
to see other options around.

Very well tuned for audio, fast, debian squeeze based, full devel-env. for
compiling from source.
Uses LXDE, so it's got a low overhead for desktop management.
You can testdrive a LiveCD/USB-Stick.

It shouldn't use PulseAudio, or if it does use PulseAudio, then at least

the 32-bit version should be able to work with common proprietary 32-bit
apps such as lightscribe apps.
Less important are audio and MIDI repositories and kernel-rt, I will

For Suse I experienced that 32-bit apps as lightscribe are ok on a
64-bit install, but Suse has several disadvantages for my palate.

make only good experiences when using the Ubuntu Studio repositories,
but this isn't a help when the Ubuntu desktop is slow, the mouse doesn't
work properly, etc..

mouse does work with Suse OOTB.
At the moment I still try to fix an Ubuntu Studio Natty install, but I
won't waste my time any longer.
Anyway, I prefer a .deb distro to a .rpm distro, but this isn't that
important. A distro where it's easy to get rid of PA without cheap
tricks would be cool.
Important is that I prefer PCI, PCIe, parallel port PS/2 to USB gear.
My favorite distro was 64 Studio.
I'll try to keep Ubuntu, as my distro, just for emergency cases I'm
looking for another distro. At the moment there are Suse 11.2 64-bit,
Edubuntu + Ubuntu Studio packages Maverick 32-bit and Ubuntu Studio +
Edubuntu packages Natty 64-bit on my machine installed. I prefer using
GNOME2.
My machine:
ASUS M2A-VM HDMI
NVIDIA 7200 GS (I could switch to an on-board ATI Radeon X1250-based
graphics, if this would be better when using a new distro)
4 GB RAM
SATA drives only
2 TerraTec EWX 24/96 (UPS didn't deliver a RME HDSPe AIO + ADAT device
last week, I should get it on Monday, but I'll keep the TerraTec cards
for MIDI)
A CTR-monitor, hence xorg.conf by default would be nice, not only
regarding to mouse issues.

half year or so, OTOH I experienced dependency hell, when Debian were
outdated and I needed to build some audio apps from svn.
By theory Ubuntu is what I would like to use, in life praxis I'm pissed
off at the moment.
I have to bite the bullet, better outdated, than unreliable.
So a few questions to Robin.
It's essential that building
- Qtractor from svn will cause no issues (I'm a tester)
- JACK2 from svn won't cause issues (I need it regarding to the
-Xalsarawmidi switch, that enables the usage of hw MIDI without
audible jitter, I'm not talking about values called ms, much
below 1 ms)
- Building an customized kernel-rt is easy to do (I guess I can
use my current Ubuntu Natty script for debian too? See

debian/squeeze and am partly responsible for the current jack2-svn head
as of writing.

dunno. but you can get 2.32.2-2 from testing and 2.32.3-1 from sid.
OT: as for filtering email: `imapfilter` is a nifty little tool;
configure it once (and preferably run it on a 24/7 server) and never
worry about switching/updating MUA again.

Since AV Linux is Debian Squeeze, you can of course use their repos.
Like I said, AVL comes with full build env. to build all you need on your own.
However, the packages delivered by AVL are quite up to date, stable, and all
apps I've tried (some only shortly) worked. A few days ago I tried Tango Studio
(based on Ubuntu 10.10) and almost nothing worked ootb. So I quickly skipped it.
NVidia & ATI drivers are installed through the means of a helper script.
Eve though it's 32-bit, there's a PAE rt-kernel available if you have 4 GB of
RAM or more.
The developer is very responsive and the forum quickly helps you out in case of
trouble.
I see no real advantage for my machine (AMD Athlon 7750BE, ASRock AOD790GX/128M,
4 GB RAM OCZ, Radeon HD4650, Delta 1010LT, BCR2000 etc...) in using a 64-bit
audio distro,
as long as there's a PAE kernel available.
I don't use evolution, so can't comment. For me an audio distro doesn't need
all
those office,
email or whatever stuff. Just a browser (FF for me), and pidgin.
I've long observed your discussions about MIDI jitter on the 64-Studio list.
Still, I can't comment
because I never perceived such issues. At least not since my last PC build.
You shouldn't need any additional repos imho, since the AVL repo is well filled
with audio software.
And then there's always Debian Multimedia. Always depending on what you plan to
do of course.

Try AV Linux.
Very well tuned for audio, fast, debian squeeze based, full devel-env. for
compiling from source.
Uses LXDE, so it's got a low overhead for desktop management.
You can testdrive a LiveCD/USB-Stick.

A good idea. A long time ago I tested it and I like it.
BUT ;) I guess I'll use 64-bit.
I simply will download and install Debian stable right now.
For Ubuntu and Suse I don't like that they switch their releases every
half year or so, OTOH I experienced dependency hell, when Debian were
outdated and I needed to build some audio apps from svn.
By theory Ubuntu is what I would like to use, in life praxis I'm pissed
off at the moment.
I have to bite the bullet, better outdated, than unreliable.
So a few questions to Robin.
It's essential that building
- Qtractor from svn will cause no issues (I'm a tester)
- JACK2 from svn won't cause issues (I need it regarding to the
-Xalsarawmidi switch, that enables the usage of hw MIDI without
audible jitter, I'm not talking about values called ms, much
below 1 ms)
- Building an customized kernel-rt is easy to do (I guess I can
use my current Ubuntu Natty script for debian too? See
attachment)
- Install Ardour3 alpha releases without issues
Hopefully evolution (2.30.3-5) can use Evolution 2.32.2 settings for
filters? And not only import the mails?
Any repositories I need to add? Any repositories I should avoid?

Like I said, AVL comes with full build env. to build all you need on your own.
However, the packages delivered by AVL are quite up to date, stable, and all
apps I've tried (some only shortly) worked. A few days ago I tried Tango Studio
(based on Ubuntu 10.10) and almost nothing worked ootb. So I quickly skipped it.
Edubuntu 10.10 32-bit + Ubuntu Studio meta packages and a lot of self

RAM or more.
I'll build customized kernels myself. Well, my Ubuntu 10.10 is a 32-bit
install, but since Ubuntu 32-bit has got no advantage, e.g. installing
proprietary 32-bit apps, that run on Suse 11.2 !!!64-bit, don't run on
Ubuntu, neither 32-bit or 64-bit, I prefer the advantages of 64-bit
installs. I don't need VST, but lightscribe and will keep Suse 11.2 to
use those apps. Debian should be 64-bit, not 32-bit on my machine.
The developer is very responsive and the forum quickly
helps you out in case of
trouble.
I see no real advantage for my machine (AMD Athlon 7750BE, ASRock AOD790GX/128M,
4 GB RAM OCZ, Radeon HD4650, Delta 1010LT, BCR2000 etc...) in using a 64-bit
audio distro,
as long as there's a PAE kernel available.
I don't use evolution, so can't comment. For me an audio distro doesn't need
all
those office,
email or whatever stuff. Just a browser (FF for me), and pidgin.
I've long observed your discussions about MIDI jitter on the 64-Studio list.
Still, I can't comment
because I never perceived such issues. At least not since my last PC build.
You shouldn't need any additional repos imho, since the AVL repo is well filled
with audio software.
And then there's always Debian Multimedia. Always depending on what you plan to
do of course.
AV Linux is a very good distro, but I wish to have 64-bit. I guess the
only 32-bit app I really need for music will be an app to set up a KORG
NANOKONTROL, but this should work with wine on a 64-bit install too, I
guess ;).
