Hello!
I'm sorry, I know I have been a bit off-topicy recently. I promise to get
better. But there is one question left:
Is there a way - short of hacking login.c from the shadow package - to
change the login prompt, which usually says:
hostname login:
? I tried and tried, read a lot of stuff, but mostly about the shell prompt
or the graphical login managers. Any idea about the console? I found francine
from the fancy login project, but even it only offered "login:" and
"password:" at certain positions on the screen.
I eventually ended up building login from source and changing the
loginprompt, but couldn't get to the "Password:" prompt. I know it's aa
bit
silly, but I simply can't believe, that with so much configurability you can't
change this!

Don't know if it works for the console login but I suspect it does.
If this doesn't work then I know there is some way to do it. We can
find it for you. I'll ask the Gentoo folks.

Thanks for the post, but that's exactly, what I've found all along,
customizing the prompt of the shell, not that of the login-program, which
getty (and its relatives) starts.
The shell is no problem, it's easy enough to find, the shell has a huge
manpage and docs. Only login is a bit more complicated. The way I've seen it,
the loginprompt is handed to pam from the login program, but the password
prompt seems to be hardcoded into pam. I've looked at the pam_set_item
function, which login.c uses to set the prompt, but there's nothing for the
password. :-(

Customizing the shell login prompt and customizing the shell prompt are 2
different things. You are free to play with the latter, but not so with the
former. You have to edit the respective sources, depending on whether you
have set up bash, zsh, csh or what not.

Lots of things in Linux seem to imitate the behavior of Sun systems.
The console login looks just like that in Solaris. Never tried to
change it though, although I'm sure somewhere you can.

As far as I can tell, that's the province of whatever getty you're
using, rather than /bin/login. A quick check on a handy Slack install
revealed that agetty doesn't support changing the login prompt;
however, ngetty does, qingy might, and fgetty is so tiny that it
should be trivial to hack on.

Thanks. I'll have a closer look at ngetty and qingy. I've seen them, yet
didn't trust them to do much of what I wanted. Perhaps I underestimated them.
In the old days there was a gettytab or some such in /etc, which supported
such features. I'll see to those gettys.
