I think this could be of interest...
I've been recently contacted by a visitor of my site that asked me if
timidity can render into wav single channels/tracks of a midifile instead
of the whole midifile.
I know that timidity can't do this and then pointed him (his name is
Pasquale Fersini) to the MIDI::Perl module site. Then he contacted the
author (Sean M. Burke) and they write a simple utility for splitting
midifiles into separate midifiles based on tracks/channel information.
For those who are programmers this can be a simple thing, but for those
(like me) that are using Linux as users, I think it's a very handy utility.
Here you can find the script:
http://members.spinn.net/~sburke/midi_splitter.pl
and here the announce on the MIDI::Perl ML:

i own RME hardware, so that's a plus!
i was thinking about building a new machine that would be dedicated
to being an audio maker. the mac running ydl is a 9600, but it has a
digi AMiii card which i'm sure is useless to anything else but digi.
(got the machine to run os x w/ digi's coreaudio though...)
and yes, i'm a professional musician. i've been tryign to sneak
max/msp and supercollider into the pop world for a while now. and now
supercollider server is being developed, there are already working
linux ports of the synth server side (so i'm told) but not the
language side..

Hello. How to convert the notes in
http://www.funet.fi/~kouhia/arabicscales.png
to keyboard's keys, MIDI values, and frequencies?
In Rosegarden, I tried to type the notes in, but Rosegarden
accepted only two first notes and then did not accept further
notes. Rosegarden had no that overtone symbol seen in the image.
It would be great if one could type whatever he sees, and only
afterwards Rosegarden would let user know if the notation makes
sense.
By the way, I tested Mounted by the Gods (www.mountedbythegods.com)
loops
ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/culture/music/western/Yello/mountedbythegods.tar.bz2
(or http)
in Rosegarden:
(1) How to set the tempo? Is it 120 with those loops?
Setting tempo based on the loop length did not work; tempo
went to 60 instead of 120 in some random manner -- a bug?
(2) Does MIDI and JACK delays affect the syncronization between
the loops? Now the mix sounds a bit out of sync and maybe is
skipping.
Hmmm.. a deng loop fills entirely the space but claps loop does not
(or otherway; try drum loops as well). What happens is that the claps
loop pauses for a while when I arrange many of them to a row. Can you
figure out if this is exactly what is intended? I'm in a believ that
I should not time-scale any of those loops.
It could be that the deng and the claps loops are all ok, but
what I hear skipping is the Rosegarden audio engine. Is it as
good as possible?
Best regards,
Juhana

Right, that's why it will be hard to add microtonal support
as an afterthought instead of designing it in from the beginning.
Anyway if the number of pitch classes you need doesn't exceed 128,
it's possible to edit the score with Rosegarden or another sequencer
and translate the MIDI file to a microtuned one with Scala. You
need to remember which note number maps to which pitch because the
score won't look the way it sounds.
>To play them with a normal MIDI instrument requires a pitch-bend

Or a MIDI Tuning event. In Scala you have the choice between pitch
bends and MIDI Tuning Standard messages when translating a MIDI file.
Then you can render it with Timidity for example. Unfortunately
Timidity doesn't support the MTS, but for example Audio Compositor
on the Windows platform does (free demo).
Fetch Scala at http://www.xs4all.nl/~huygensf/scala
It can also do realtime MIDI relaying with pitch bend tuning.

Follwing up the earlier discussion about Linux audio hardware made in
China, here's a news story I saw today. Apparently in China you can
get five years in jail for running a website:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/3039041.stm
So we're unlikely to find out the truth about working conditions in
Chinese factories, on the web at least.
For the record, although I managed to buy a UK made mixer for my
studio, when I unwrapped my M Audio Delta 1010 I think there was a
'made in China' sticker on it.
I also bought a Behringer mic recently, and mentioned these issues to
the music shop owner. He'd previously worked for a company where
construction had been moved to the Phillipines, and had witnessed the
effects first hand. But since everything except the very high-end
stuff is now made this way, what can he sell in his shop otherwise?
Cheers

Hello. Does the linuxsampler.sourceforge.net really work
as a full-blown sampler? What else I need for using it?

Just add the low-delay trick to the diskin opcode. The trick is
dated at least down in 1995 (patent is 1997).
By the way, what Csound I should use? Unofficial linux Csound does not
work with Hankelson's instruments, and official Csound has no ./configure
for easy install. Is PD or similar better supported? Has anyone
orc-to-pd converter so that I may use Hankelson's instruments
in PD?
I must repeat what others have said: we need good examples and demos.
I tried to check good Csound demos but no such thing available.
Examples were from dull to the worst kind of monotonous tones.

Hello,
AlsaModularSynth 1.5.9 is available from alsamodular.sf.net
New Features:
- The Midi input module (MCV) has now a Trigger Output which enables
Multi-Triggering (Thanks to Fons Adriaensen for the patch). To enable
Multi-Triggering, just connect the trigger output of the MCV to the
retrigger input of the ENV.
- New module "Stereo Mixer". With this module you can mix several patches
and switch between them. Signal paths that are muted are not processed.
(Again: Thanks to Fons Adriaensen for suggesting this module).
- New example patches demonstrate the MCP-Plugins by Fons Adriaensen. Take the
time to try these plugins. They add many new sounds to AlsaModularSynth
and vastly improve it's sound quality. I especially recommend
example_basic_vcf_reverb_moogfilter_env.ams and
example_phaser.ams (don't miss to play with the ModWheel)
Have fun !

Did the OP install wxGTK from source or an RPM? When running the default
source install, wx-config is installed in /usr/local/bin - maybe that's
not in your path?

Hi,
I've mapped my multimedia keys to play CDs with commands from cdtool.
The only thing thats missing is a load command. There seems to be no
opposite to cdeject.
The only way I can close the tray is with
cdrecord -load dev=0,0,0
Is there anything simpler or do I simply have too much time on my hands?
TIA, Tim
