If you're feeling adventurous you can try Ardour. Here is my page on setting it up (this isn't easy):

Subject: [linux-audio-user] Making a demo.
Hi everybody.
I'm an italian bass player and I'd like to record a 4 songs demo for the band
I play in with my PC (with Linux obviously). I'm searching for someone who
can suggest me any documentation/book regarding this argument and/or share
with me his experience (the hardware/software used and so on ...).
Thanks in advance for your reply,
Marco.
I installed Jack from Planet-CCRMA. I have a Soundblaster Live with RH
9.0. However, Jack doesn't seem to start completely.
I understand that I should be able to basically start Jack using
jackd -d alsa -d hw:0
or
jackstart -R -d alsa -d hw -r 44100
However, it stops at
jackd -d alsa -d hw:0
loading driver ..
creating alsa driver ... hw:0|1024|2|48000|swmon|rt
I think it should set up channels, etc. Jack-dependent apps complain
that Jack isn't working.
Several times, it has done this correctly, but I can't understand why it
worked then but doesn't now. As far as I can see, the ALSA drivers are
loaded and working.
I'm fairly new to ALSA, so I can't provide much more information than
this.
Could anyone offer any advice?

Hi all!
Some time ago I asked for a PCI soundcard which can deal with
*.sf(2) soundfonts and works on Linux. I was told "soundblaster live 512"
is a good choice. But this soundcard is unknown to all resellers.
(They know "soundblaster live 5.1", but I'm afraid it has no
hardware MIDI synthesizer.)
Now a reseller recommended "Audigy 6.1 platinum". Is there
anybody who has experiences with this type of soundcard?
Escpecially: Does the hardware MIDI synthesizer work on Linux?
Can I change the orchestra using "sfxload" ?

I sent this to alsa-dev last night. Some of you may want to read it here
too.

We want normal music!", I think that was more like acting than anything

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out what device I should point
applications (ardour) at in order for them to see
incoming mmc and to send mtc. I've got what appears to
be a working USB midiman 8x8:
>aconnect -i
client 0: 'System' [type=kernel]
0 'Timer '
1 'Announce '
client 72: 'Rawmidi 1 - MidiSport 8x8' [type=kernel]

With a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 I used
device="/dev/snd/midiC1D0" but this device doesn't
seem to be working.
/dev/snd/ has the following devices:

I'm using alsa-patch-bay to manage the connections:

OK, that all seems fairly normal but I'm thinking it
isn't. From the 8x8 perspective; incoming data to the
8x8 Midi IN 2 should go out of all eight channels but
it fails to go out channel 1. So, there's something
funny going on. This is according to the indicator
lights on the front of the 8x8.
>From Alsa's perspective Midi IN 2 = port 1
Anyway, I've been up all nite and am tired. If my
message isn't clear enough please ask questions and
I'll reply. Hey, ladcca, alsa-patchbay and the 8x8
firmware driver are lookin' sweet. Thanks much!

Hello all,
I've got a Delta44 and have some volume control issues with it.
I'm sure it a result of me not understanding the more complicated volume
and gain controls I've got.
1) Under GNU/Linux, the system sounds good and everything, but
input volume is *very* touchy. envy24control has two sets of sliders
that seem to affect input levels - ADC[0123] and IPGA[0123].
If I set the input levels with the ADC sliders, the IPGA sliders
are automatically zero'ed. Even with ADC all the way up, levels are way
to low to be useful.
If I set the input level with the IPGA sliders, the ADC are
automatically maxed out, but things become really touchy - it's easy for
me to clip.
2) Despite all of this, the card still doesn't have the volume
sensitivity it does under Windows. With Windows, a condenser mic is
fully as sensitive as it should be. Under GNU/Linux, it leaves a little
bit to be desired.
What's the right way to control this stuff?

professionals and research institutions that are working in this
sector to present their work in an open environment in which the
innovation will be promoted with benefits for all the community.
To this end, a set of calls have been opened as described in the
following.
Deadline for the submission is the 1st of July 2003 according to
the following descriptions.
*+****+Call for Tutorial*+****+
Tutorial proposals have to be presented as 2-3 pages description
including: description of the tutorial, list of the tools mentioned,
name and biography of the person giving the tutorial, history of the
tutorial if it has been already given other times. The tutorial
should be focussed on more than one product and should give a
general view of the problems of the topic.
The tutorials have to be of 45 minutes and should to be focussed on
the following topics:
-- production of courseware and content for music education
-- production of music scores for publishing
-- music distribution and protection
-- Standardization: MPEG, SMIL, SVG, XHTML, XML...
-- .
*+****+Call for Products & Best Practices*+****+
Product presentations have to be proposed as 1-2 pages description as
a flyer with possibly a demo to be uploaded on the MUSICNETWORK www
site. In addition, it is requested to know: name and biography of the
person giving the presentation, material distributed during the
workshop, number of customers using the products and a description
of its diffusion. The presentation has to be focussed on a general
view of the product, architecture, format, most important features,
future developments and evolutions, integration and interoperability

minutes to explain the problem at the workshop to start the
discussion for other 15-20 minutes. Specific experts will be invited

the audience. Preferred topics are:

--
*+****+Call for innovative Applications with demo*+****+
Innovative applications are typically in a middle status from
research work and real products. They have been probably proposed in
the past as research works while they have not been supported enough
to become real products. They have to be proposed as 2-3 pages
description as a flyer with possibly a demo to be uploaded on the
MUSICNETWORK www site. The selected Applications will be entitled to
use the seal "Assessed by MUSICNETWORK". In addition, it is

give their presentation, while we will give space to present the
results to a very large number of proposals in each category. A
large visibility will be given to all proposals on the WWW site. All
the proposals will be posted on the WWW site, if this is not
acceptable for you please mention in the proposal and email.
The documents submitted will be collected and used for creating the
