Hello,
I'm experiencing the fst lockup problem many have complained about on
this list. Has anyone found out the cause yet?
I'm using Wine 0.0.20040615-1 (from debian packages).
Sampo
hi, ive been making music for 5 yrs with the
computer, ive been using virtual sequencer + sampler
configurations (cubase + halion) i just love making
music this way (i dont use synths a lot, when i use
them i render them to .wav and load it in a sampler) ,
i bought a creative labs audigy card for using the
software sampler in realtime using the asio driver
with my midi keyboard (yamaha DSR-500, very old but
with midi!) and a dual head graphics card (ati radeon
7000)... ive been using it in windows with dual
screens and just love the way dual screen works in a
virtual studio... so, what i want to do is totally
dump windows and start making music in linux i totally
love this os , so i installed fedora core 2 with the
all the planet ccrma tweaks and apps... i think i have
a decent setup now, alsa, jack bla bla bla , i also
have a decent computer (i guess) athlon xp 1700+ with
640 mb ram (or something like that) ...
so, i have several questions:
1) Which software combination do you recommend for
using a sequencer and a sampler? ive been using
rosegarden, and i think its excellent but i havent
found a way to hook up a virtual sampler, and i
really need one!!! (have my own custom wav sample
library ive been making all these years)
is there any dssi sampler or something like that???
or maybe should i mess with the muse softsynth api ?
or it would be better to use an external soft sampler
like specimen??? any one knows other programs?
or should i use a tracker and render to wav and load
it in rosegarden or perhaps ardour???
or should i use soundfonts (ive never tried) and send
midi data to the audigy wavetable? (thats the last
option for me i guess... ive never really liked sf
though ive never tried them really... i just like to
make it all in a soft sampler) but if its needed then
ill use this as last resort...
or maybe should i buy an external harware sampler ???
any people with the same problem???
the second question:
2) how can i make 8th note shuffle in rosegarden
sequencer?? are there anyways to create offbeat
patterns??? this function is so important in my music.
the third and last question:
3) any one knows how to setup the dual head monitor
configuration? ive been trying to setup but failed...
i have both monitors showing the same screen... what i
really want is the Big Desktop extended in both
monitors so i can use a sequencer in one and another
program in the other... i think this is called
xinerama in linux... i just cant configure it...
thanks in advance (for the patience reading this mail)
but i really want to setup my studio in linux...
i only use windows for audio apps but i have to boot
another hd and i also want to fully dump win32... i
want to make music with open source tools... i know
may be everthing is not as developed as in the win
world but i am willing to accept drawbacks like having
to configure everything by hand (a typical musician
just want to use the tools and not worry about how the
configuration) and trying to optimize your work
(typically i just load as many vst synths as i need in
my song i usually dont worry about cpu load and
rendering everything to .wav ) im very excited about
this excellent apps growing up and getting more stable
like rosegarden and ardour... and being able to
compose music with the opensource philosophy...
ivan.

Thanks, Jan. I will give that a try.
I just noticed that Mandrake 10 (another partition on the same machine) shows
all of the channels, so it automatically must have configured itself (neat!).
I will try the same with Slackware, which is the one I am using for audio
work.
Thanks for your help!

Hi Lazzaro.
Thx for a suggestion, but no results.
.... it's silence under aplay and mpg 123 too.
Oryginal post:
Hi.
I use the motherboard SOLTEK SL-75DRV5, with VIA8233a.
I haven't problems with OSS drivers (via82cxxx_audio).It works perfectly .But...ALSA, hmmm, strange: completly nothing, silence. Anyway it's a short history of my battle with ALSA:
- lsmod shows all modules
- alsamixer is unmuted and 100% for all
- IRQ 10, only for VIA8233a, no conflicts
- a silence on kernels 2.4.x or 2.6.7
- modprobe.conf with standard settings from alsaconf (via82xx on slot-0) for kernel 2.6.7
- modules.conf with standard rules from the web, for kernels 2.4.x (I remember about ./snddevices...)
- .asoundrc with hw:0,0 doesn't work (from ALSA web)
- hotplug is running
- silence on XMMS from ALSA (from OSS-no problems)
- I prepared missing devices into make_extra_nodes.sh (similar devices like snddevices for kernels 2.4.x)
- when I close KDE, I have: "ALSA lib pcm_hw:549(snd_pcm_hw_start) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_START failed: Broken pipe"
That's all.
Any suggestions?
PS. I have the same problem on Mandrake, and Debian with new kernels. I remember, than It worked on Slack 8.0 on my pc.

Yes, I have the record setting checked, but it still is not working. The mixer
(the one that comes with Gnome) has faders, and they do affect the sound
levels.
Is there any way I can test to see if an application is accessing /dev/dsp
properly?
Thanks... Jay

I have been having great luck with Slackware 9.1 and Luke's AudioSlack software.
With my onboard sound chip (using SI7012 driver) I was recording with Adrour,
getting zero xruns in Jack, even with Hydrogen running in the background
providing drums! Wow, I was impressed.
So I made the jump to a higher-end soundcard and installed the Delta 1010TL.
Now, it seems to be recognized by Alsa, because the Ice1712 driver is loaded.
When I cat /proc/asound/cards I see it as 0 and the onboard sound chip as 1.
There are also entries when I cat /proc/adound/devices.
But now I am completely lost... I have been reading the documentation on the
.asoundrc file, and have even tried to replace my existing file with something
I pulled off teh Alsa site for another, similar card that used the same
driver.
Can anyone help me make sense of setting this up? Is there a standard setup
that for all of this cards ins/outs? I feel like it's way over my head.
Thanks for any help! I am a little discouraged today, but I am very pleased to
finally be making some music in Linux!
Jay
Anyone who likes hammond has gotta give this a go.
It's a virtual organ with a really big warm sound. No gui yet, but
having loads of presets make up for that.
Sorry if this is old news, I just discovered it on the 'sound and midi
software for Linux' site'.

Another, hopefully not too obscure, question...
I have a Fedore Core 1 system that I'd like to record radio programs with. I
found a great little program, RadioCap
(http://www.scheinwelt.at/~norbertf/radiocap_homepage/), that will do just
that. It listens to /dev/dsp for its input.
FC1 uses OSS as default, and for the soundcard in this particular machine it was
working fine using the ESSSOLO1 driver. When I plug the radio into my mic or
line-in ports and unmute the channels, I can hear the radio through the PC's
speakers. But no input level shows on RadioCap. I did a few tests with XMMS,
etc., and it certainly seems to be using /dev/dsp for sound.
Is this a sound card problem? If I can hear the input, shouldn't it be able to
record it?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jay
Hi Robert (with note to Christian Henz),
Thanks for your reply here, also, and for the suggestion. I also have
the Radeon 9200.
I just went out and got the latest fglrx driver --- just before seeing
this message in fact. I was previously using the Radeon drv. Previously
I was a little apprehensive and worried about using fglrx and had put
it off (since January!) but decided that perhaps a change in the DRI
module might be an improvement. So I was glad to see that you had also
installed these drivers.
fglrxinfo:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9200SE DDR Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3 (X4.3.0-3.11.1) <<<<<--- new one
MusE now will not lock memory under any circumstances I have tried, even
with your suggestion of limiting the VideoRam.
WARNING: Cannot lock memory:: Cannot allocate memory
WARNING: Cannot lock memory:: Cannot allocate memory
midi thread 1652 _NOT_ running SCHED_FIFO
qjackctl still locks up the system, even with your suggestion of limited
VideoRam. With ulimit -l 128000 or anything else qjackctl works just
fine. MusE won't lock memory with either unlimited or 128000.
So, I would conclude that IF MusE would be allowed to lock memory, it
would lock my system up just as qjackctl does when ulimit -l is unlimited.
I'm not sure how much I really want to pursue this. Linux isn't a real-time
O/S, so trying to make it act like one is probably doomed --- at the
very least, it's complicated.
(Note to Christian: I've seen postings with troubles with 2.4 as well, so
it's not just 2.6. The postings I saw were with respect to other programs,
but still memory locking stuff.)
Thanks again and best regards,
Dave.
