Hi all,
just to let you know that now is the last chance to vote for your
favorite audio tool in Linux Journal's 2004 Readers' Choice poll.
Voting will end *August 5*, 2004, and winners will be published in the

MPI has replaced PVM because PVM was cumbersome to use.
Considering that, could it be that OSC is as cumbersome to
use as PVM?
Anyone would like to post a short code which creates, sends
and receives OSC messages? I could then compare it to the
MPI and PVM examples and find out which one is closer to OSC.

Hi,
Maybe your problem is, that via onboard is loaded before sb live.
Then via onboard audio will be /dev/dsp0 and sblive /dev/dsp1
Same is for ALSA. Via will be first and default soundcard.
Could you send my your modules.conf ??
There should be what sound driver loads and in what order.
Also for midi playback on sb live is ALSA (it contains hardware midi
synth - i think, this is better as timidity).

Piksel - www.piksel.no - is a yearly event for artists and developers
working with Free Libre and Open Source Software (FLOSS) for realtime
processing of video and sound. It will take place at BEK - the Bergen
Centre for Electronic Art, in Bergen, Norway from october 29. to november
7. 2004.
The first Piksel event was arranged in november 2003, and gathered around 30
artists/developers from all parts of the world. It consisted of
artistic/technical presentations, coding workshops and live performances.
All activities were documented in a daily blog:
http://www.piksel.no/log.html
One of the results from the event was the initiation of the Piksel Video
Framework for 'interoperability between various free software applications
dealing with video manipulation techniques' - http://www.piksel.org

Performing artists using open source software in the creation and
presentation of their work are invited to apply. This call goes out to
VJ-crews, live coders, typing divas, virtual actors, noise combos and FLOSS
performers of all kinds.
Please send documentation material - preferably as a URL to online
documentation with images/video to piksel04(a)bek.no

Hi,
Something is wrong with id 8286:24d5
24d5 - this part is good - southbridge ICH5
8286 - this is wrong - should be 8086 for intel
In alsa-driver/alsa-kernel/pci/intel8x0.c
is something like
{ 0x8086, 0x24d5, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, DEVICE_INTEL_ICH4 },
/* ICH5 */
try add this row after previous row
{ 0x8286, 0x24d5, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, DEVICE_INTEL_ICH4 },
/* ICH5 */

The compile errors below have me stumped.
I successfully compiled and installed LADCCA 0.4.0
and other dependencies.
After configuring Jack-Rack, I had to hack the
Makefiles because the configure got the locations
of the xml ..../lib and ..../include directories
wrong. Strange, had the same problem with the
makefiles for LADCCA.
Finally my 'make' for jack-rack led to this:

Any troubleshooting hints would be welcomed.
Oh, and latest, alsa 1.05a, jack 0.98, etc., many other packages
compiled myself, others from Debian unstable.

Hi all,
A guy I'm trying to help is having problems getting ALSA working on
his box, he is running Mandrake 10 with a Intel D865PERL Mainboard.
Sndconfig recognizes an 8286:24d5 device and it says it is not
supported. Is there a chance that this chip is so new that it really is
not supported by ALSA?

"warm" means good low end :)
it is NOT true that EQ in the mix will fix problems created with your mic selection - not at ALL - one of the obvious things is that you can never ad back in what wasn't there to begin with, but there's more - better to spend your money/effort on good and/or workable mics (and the accoustic enviroment you're recording in) than on EQ and gadgets to "fix" it later - you really can't fix a damn thing, honestly
now then - I probably wouldn't use a 58 (or knock off) on hand drums - I would use a 57 though - as far as female vocals
a nice solid condensor is good - I have a Cascade MT20 that I use like i would use a u47 if I had one - it's about 400 dollars - AKG 414s get used a lot on vocals, they are about 1000 - AKG makes (or made) a tube version of the 414 - that's a great mic but I found it a little sibilant and harsh on some female vocals
madonna uses a 57 for her vocals
