I recently picked up an RME HDSP MADI card to test it as a playback
source for a digital mixing console. For testing purposes, I loaded it
onto a VIA epia board (yes, you read that right, 600 MHz, baby!) and
installed the recently released DeMuDi 1.2. When DeMuDi loads, the
first thing I do is modprobe snd-hdpsm. Then I can start jackvia
qjackqtl and it shows 64 record channels and 64 playback channels.
Success!! kinda....
Now I'm stuck. I can't figure out how to change the mixer settings.
I've studied all the info at the ALSA site and on Winfried Ritsch's
site but I'm too much of a noob to know what it means.
hdspmixer apparently does not support this card yet. It says:
Card 0 : RME HDSP MADI at 0xde000000, irq 10
No Hammerfall DSP card found
alsamixer seems to have no effect (?) I think the playback channels are
not routed to the outputs.
Winfried has some example apps that use the hwdep-interface to set
mixer values but the .tgz file seems to be corrupt. using tar -xvf or
-xvf it reports the file is not in gzip format.
Questions:
How do I set up the card so that Jack can read/write all 64 inputs and
outputs, with no attenuation in the card's mixer?
Does anybody have a valid hwdep-interface example for this card? (I am
trying to contact Winfried but I'm not sure I have a valid email
address for him)
Thanks for any help,
Ben Loftis

Snap-in... just means modules that are easy to plug and unplug. Probably visually.
Actually, Reason's probably closer. If it would work with virtual desktops and there were some planning put into placement of gui stuff {omnipresent, floating toolbars,etc.} that might be nice.

Moog modular uses realistic patch cables to interconnect modules. I'm thinking that uses way too many resources. Something simpler would be better.

Many people are though. There are a huge number of vst plugins. It would vastly increase your user base very quickly:

If you look through the Kvr database... you might pay attention to how many are written with Synthedit.

I was just thinking of it in terms of a module. Osc does make it very modular already though. I'd not actually considered that. I was thinking of it in terms of a large internal thing.

How's that? Code optimized for Parallel virtual machines and Mosix clusters... lots of processing power cheap. Peer2peer midi synchs it netwide. You could potentially have an orchestra that spanned the globe and have it operate within the same framework. {Though this does place a twist into the idea of virtual patch cords. :}}

Alrighty...
Hi,
Does Jamin have any facility to do a peak hold display where a
second curve is drawn and is made up of the peak values displayed in the
faster, currently existing curve? If so, how do I turn it on? This is
useful when you're trying to get an overall feeling for the energy
across time instead of what's happening at a specific instant.
Also, I don't see (but am probably missing) a way to set the decay
speed of the display. Typical sort of fast (what's there now) medium and
slow. Often the peak hold operates pretty close to the slow curve, or
sticks around permanently until you do a reset by hand.
FYI - right now the Gentoo version is 0.8.0 and there is an error
message at startup about not finding lookahead_limiter_const_1906.so.
I don't know about the sound yet but I must say that the basic tool
compares pretty nicely to the Waves stuff I normally use. I'm currently
mixing a CD and looking at using Jamin for my final version. Thanks for
a nice tool.
Thanks,
Mark
Hi
It seems
(http://forum.skype.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=4068&sid=7c8eb62c7f9a5c611b24b9dc…)
that it's a known thing that skype is not working for some linux people,
including me. I'm on a well configured debian/unstable system running
kernel 2.6.4 on a PIV2.4 laptop (sound card is i810). Anyone here
experienced problems like this with skype *and* can point me in the
direction of a solution??

Frank - Mark,
Thanks to both of you for replies. (Good to hear from you, too Mark!)
Using kaconnect shows only MIDI ports, same as ALSA patch bay. What
Frank said is correct. I had some improper mixer settings (duh!), so couldn't
get PCM in's to be hardware in's. I needed some reassurance that Jack
really could do this; the outputs were working fine, so it was temporarily
confusing me, as in "What????" Like many of you, I have too many cables
and switches around here!
---------------------------
For those who have external devices (synths, mixer):
I should perhaps point out to those who may not have thought about this
that they can use their onboard (probably crappy) sound capability as
an effects box rather than have it sitting idle, especially for effects
that are low-level and doubly especially for distortion, etc. Just route
your Aux send into the card (I'm using a Y to get it into both channels
in Line in), run the output back to the Aux returns. Fire up jackd with
-d was_idle_soundcard and jack-rack. Use jack-patch-bay or whatever to
connect the soundcard inputs to jack-rack and jack-rack outputs to soundcard
outputs. Be sure to mute line, but use it as a capture port and be sure
to enable PCM. I think that's it. Now you have an effects box.
I hope I described that all correctly, but people should get the gist
of it. It does all actually work. Apologies to those who already know
all this. It had never occurred to me before to utilize my idle soundcards
in this way.
---------------------------
Thanks again and best regards,
Dave.
Hey there - you need to do some research on specific mics and types of mics for your particular application - it may well be that there are 3000 dollar mics that won't do the job you need as well as a 120 dollar mic - for example, I don't think I'd stick 4 neumann u87s on the snare and toms of a drum kit rather than 4 shure sm57s
oh gosh - I had some links but i'm not at home - rats...hmmm - uhm...hmmm - i think maybe i put some links about mics in my linux journal article:

I'm forwarding this on because we need folks to help out with sound
design in addition to CG stuff. Aqsis, in you've never heard of it, is
an open source REYES rendering suite that is Renderman-compliant.

A few of us have been conspiring on the Aqsis IRC channel (#aqsis on
freenode), and have started the pre-planning stages of a short CG film
produced entirely with open source/free-as-in-speech software. And by
"entirely", we mean everything -- modelling, audio, editing,
pre-production, etc. At the center of this, of course, will be Aqsis.
Right now we are recruiting a full production team to help get this
project off the ground. This means:
* producer/project managers
* script writers
* modellers
* animators
* shader writers
* editors/post-production
* directors
* sound design
* music
The first and most crucial thing we need is a high-level
producer/project manager. We have a couple of the other positions
filled, but we need someone who has the time and commitment to manage
the entire project.
Please visit
http://aqsis.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/aqsiswiki.cgi/AqsisMovieProject
for more details. If you want to volunteer, please sign up via the Wiki!

Greetings all,
Jack-Rack with plugins can be used as an effects box for PCM inputs.
What about HW inputs? I don't see a way to hook HW1/HW2 on my sound
cards to effects programs. The program would be something like a full-duplex
record program that would allow capture on HW1/HW2, process in effects
rack, then output to PCM1/PCM2 on the same card. Although I'm not very
familiar with Cubase, it noticed it allows effects processing of HW inputs
before output. Not many programs do this; most process only PCM inputs
from what I can tell.
Thanks very much for any information. I have external synths and mixer.
It would be nice to utilize my spare audio cards as effects processors
for the external mixer via Aux send/receive's (both, not just "send").
Dave.
Regarding my HDSP MADI woes, the .tgz file on Winfried's page was
tarred, but not gzipped. Hence my confusion. So maybe now I can get
the mixer utilities working.
