Hi
I was wondering id the edirol pcr-1 is working under linux? If not are

Hi everyone,
my first post here, after a long while lurking and reading
archives - so first: thanks for all the help I've already got
from this list (quite a lot!)
I want to do some audio stuff on my new laptop - it's
an AMD-64 box with a via k8t890 / vt8237 chipset.. I'm
able to get jackd at -p 64 on an unpatched 2.6.14-rc5
kernel, but I'd like a better quality soundcard. It has
ExpressCard slot, but no PCMCIA, so that is out, and the
firewire support looks too experimental for me just now,
leaving me with USB as the only option, it seems.
Ideally, I'd like to work in 64-bit mode, but I can boot into
a 32-bit installation if unavoidable (32-bit is gentoo,
64-bit is slamd64 right now).
After looking at the market, the edirol / roland UA-25
looks like a good basic unit for my needs (occasional
mic recording, guitar input, midi) and my budget
(not entirely fixed, but the ~ 150 GBP is, er, "convenient"
just now..:)
However I've seen some problems mentioned on this
list with that card, and I'm unsure about the via usb
controller on my m/b:
00:10.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1
Controller (rev 81) (prog-if 00 [UHCI]) [four of these, though only 3
physical ports..]
00:10.4 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0 (rev 86)
(prog-if 20 [EHCI])
I've seen some worrying things written about the VT82xxxxx
and audio.
I've also looked into the UR-80, similarly priced Tascam and
M-audio models, the UA-101 (more expensive, but I could just
about buy that if it turned out to be a good idea), the BCA-2000
(what a shame!) and the Mindprint Trio USB (which has no
midi, but looks like an interesting bit of kit - again, I could just
about stretch to it - it claims to work with standard USB drivers
on windows, but haven't seen any mention of it on linux-related
sites..)
I'd welcome any advice related to the above, in particular
reports of working UA-25's on VT82xxxxx (rev 81! ;-)
controllers, or strong recommendations pro or anti the
other hardware I've mentioned, or indeed ones I haven't
thought of..
Thanks for any contributions received!
Cheers,
- Pete.

Hi again Paul and everyone at the list, after recompile jack I'd
recompile ardour and qjackctl.Everything is working better now .
To compile jack I did:
configure --prefix=/usr --enable-posix-shm
--with-default-tmpdir=/mnt/ramfs
For Ardour I did:
scons PREFIX=/usr BUILD_SSE_OPTIMIZATIONS=1 USE_SSE_EVERYWHERE=0 KSI=0
For qjackctl :
configure --prefix=/usr
Thanks a lot.
Saludos

Hello,
I have two questions abouts the ardour mixer settings.
1. I applied two patches to a guitar track and can listen to the
modified signal as long as I'm not recording. What do I have to do in
order to monitor the signal after having passed these two plugins?
2. Can anyone of you suggest a good rock guitar plugin setting? I'm
currently using "freeverb"+"foldover distortion" - the result is okay,
but somehow not enough.
Thanks in advance

Hi Mark. Right. Here goes. This is on FC2, not Gentoo. I'll have a go on
Gentoo when I get the time. Wine is version 0.9-1fc2winehq, savihost is
version 1.23. I borrowed mfc42.dll from my XP install and put it
in .wine/drive_c/windows/system32. Savihost.exe I put in the program files,
and also put Lin-Plugs FreeAlpha synth's .dll in there. Renamed
savihosts .exe to FreeAlpha, and it worked first go. Now FreeAlpha synth has
a separate file for it's patches. it will only use the default patch that is
on the synth But it works. I've been trying a lot of freebie synths, and
notice that they use a lot of cpu. Ksim is showing, when idle, between 70 &
80% cpu useage, and yet the synth itself only shows less than 5% cpu useage.
VirSyn's MicroTERA. a free synth uses 100% cpu. Not enough to freeze the
mouse, and even though I did get some sounds out of it, it would not load the
sound bank. Native Instruments Reactor Session One 4.0, another freebie fully
operational synth. When installed, this has a .exe and a .dll. Running
the .exe brings up the GUI, but the only menu item that works is the one for
sample rate, so cannot connect usb midi keyboard or audio output. The .dll
through savihost works fine, but again at idle, is showing 50% cpu on Ksim,
and the synth is showing about 18.8%. The complete patch bank is available on
this synth. Single notes play ok, but push the cpu on Ksim to about 95%.
Chords push the cpu useage to 100%+ and become quite broken up. All in all,
I'm very happy with the way this is going. Hardly anything worked on
wine-20041019-1fc2winehq, but 0.9-1fc2winehq has certainly made more things
work. One observation. I tried crystal.dll on numerous occasions, and it
would not open. At that time only mfc42.dll was in the system32 directory.
After installing Reactor Session One synth, and perhaps something else,
more .dll's turned up in system32. I thought I'd try crystal synth again, and
this time it worked. The extra .dll's are listed below.
msvcirt.dll
MSVCP60.DLL
Msvcrt.dll
Here are a few of the freebie synths I tried, and which worked ok with
savihost.
Triangle I & Triangle II from http://www.rgcaudio.com
Interruptor Dub Siren from http://www.interruptor.ch
JXPlugins JX220 from http://www.jxplugins.co.uk
LFObia Mocheese from http://www.electronicscene.com/elektracidz
LRsynths Trionimox from http://www.alphastrike.de
Psychic Modulation Pandemonium from http://www.psychicmodulation.com
Tobybear Screamer from http://www.tobybear.de
LinPlug Free Alpha from http://www.linplug.com
I'd be really interested in knowing why these synths use so much cpu when just
lying idle. Nigel.

Hello,
I have given up on the mainstream Fedora 4 kernel and am trying to build
2.6.14-rt5. So far I can get it built and running, but without jack it
seems.
I am wondering what are the best settings for jack using Ingo's RT
patch: how do I make the most of the patch?
(I am trying to use CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT=y)
I use qjackctl and my .jackrc is: /usr/local/bin/jackd -u -dalsa -dhw:1
-r48000 -p128 -n2 -m -H -M
hw:1 corresponds to the card number from /proc/asound/cards associated
with my RME Hammerfall Multiface.
I may have to change my .asoundrc as in the mainstream kernel cards 0
and 1 are switched for some reason (if that is what is sotpping jackd).
The only message I get is something to the effect of NTpolltime timed
out, or something... My biggest question is not how to get jackd working
- I will fix that. I am curious how to get PD running on my machine
processing complex patches but with a latency of 5.33 msec (128 frame
buffer size I think) or less. I would even settle fo 10msec (256) with
no XRUNS.
Thank you all for your help!

Hi
I'm the happy user of om/lash/jack. Occationally I'd like to trigger
samples (multisamples would be nice, although single samples would be ok
if their pitch can be altered). What are my options if I'd like to keep
things session-able from lash?

Hi everybody!
I've found a software Linux vocoder
(http://www.sirlab.de/linux/download_vocoder.html) which is available both as
a LADSPA plugin and a standalone program.
I've got an old Pentium 166MMX with 64MB RAM which is unused, and i'd like to
use it as a live vocoder. It would be cool to bring it on the stage, plug a
keyboard and a microphone in its audio board(s), turn it on without any
display, mouse or keyboard and have it already working as a vocoder.
Unfortunately I have no idea of how to make it. I don't know how to make the
vocoder (plugin or standalone) start and work automatically after the boot,
possibly without having to start a graphical interface (which would be heavy
for the poor P166 and totally unuseful, since there's no display).
Any idea about how to realise such a thing?
Bye,
Lorenzo
