The problem is also in the Debian 2.6.12-1 kernel. I cannot modprobe
snd-mpu401 even with pnp=0. I can ALWAYS modprobe snd-mpu401-uart (and
cat /proc/asound/cards on the 2.6.11 bootup shows it as an UART) but doing
this did not activate the device.
Question on mixer setup.
I'd like to begin recording to my pc, with a standard one input sound
card. I'd like to do vocals and midi from my S90. To do the vocals
though, I'd like the output of what's on the computer, and the output
of what's coming from the S90, to go to the vocalist, but only be
recording her vocals, not the whole main mix again. Do I need to get
a mixer with sub groups so that I can play the entire mix through the
main outputs and control outputs but only record her vocals? How do
other people do this? The Behringer 1204-PRO seems like it might do
what I want, but I thought I'd ask others opinion.
Thanks!

DeMuDi\Agnula
totally rocks my mom. I installed it, it just worked, and it has
everything plus the kitchen sink and garbage disposal.
Its also the one that I'm recommending to my family and friends as the
easiest way to get started. So far, i've got quite a few new users
working on it doing audio.
Thanks Agnula Guys! (And Ubuntu. And Sarge.... and rosegarden,
muse..... etc. :) )

Could be! The Yamaha card is not only NOT pnp, it has no footprint at
all--Windows will not detect it as a "new" device. This can be an advantage!
I have taken this kernel off meanwhile because the DRM compiled with it also
does not work. Debian has posted its 2.6.12, now called "linux-image" because
of the these demudi "kernel-image"s, I suppose. I'll play with that first.
The jack packages on SId are a mess right now, anyway.
A problem is that a lot of alsa stuff is simply undocumented.
Jono,
Welcome. I installed DeMuDi from the Agnula web site, and was
recording within 10 minutes. The help file gets you up and running,
and after that, its "no more complicated" than any professional level
solution. Of course, as is my common complaint with open source,
there's 10000 designs to build a hammer to kill a fly, 75% of which
haven't been worked on since 1990, and 50% of them w\o documentation.
Luckily, there's some good quality solutions that are still being
worked on, so documentation is the big killer now. DeMuDi has allowed
me to get quite a few other people using linux audio.
I consider myself an amateur musician, but I am very comfortable with
Linux. However, none of my linux knowledge, aside from knowing where
documentation "lives", came into play with DeMuDi.
As with all software, what seperates the professional from the amateur
is the level of knowledge of the system. Unlike what some people
think, more money for better tools does not make you better. My
brother can still make my casio keyboard sound way better than I can
make my Yamaha S90.... :)
Like I stated before, I see 3 huge barriers:
1) Too many choices, and not enough standards. Do I use Wired, Muse,
RoseGarden, Jazz++, etc? Well, unlike windows\mac, where, when I buy
a software package, I can be reasonably certain that its still in
development, Linux packages sometimes don't get worked on, get forked
or just die out... The other issue is getting programs to work with
each other. This can be as much a problem on windows as linux, and is
something we're working on by implementing standards like ladspa, etc.
2) Lack of documentation. Getting fixed in many ways, wiki,
rosegarden book, etc. But no knowing that you ask this or that
mailing list, or read this or that web page.... or being too scared
to do so is a real downer. The windows sequencer books in B&N have
certainly tempted me. I'd love to see more for Linux programs.
3) Lack of driver support from manufacturers. Stuff has to get
written by the community with limited specifications. This makes it
hard for us to get hardware working sometimes. That we have as much
as we do always amazes me.
(Gotta credit DP for his linux sound articles. I've used that linux
overview many a time. Would love to see his book updated soon.... )
I've seen what a community can do though, and I have high hopes for
linux sound. :)

Hi all,
I'm just making my first steps into recording/composing in Linux, with
some success.
I've got an complete up-to-date PlanetCCRMA FC3 installation, on a P3
700Mhz machine, with something in the region of 640Mb RAM, and a dirt
cheap CMI8738 soundcard. You can't go wrong with a soundcard that cost
less than £5! (I'll get something better soon, don't worry...)
At the moment, I've started jack with qjackctl. I'm recording my guitar
in ardour, alongside some sampled drum sounds.
The drum sounds are arranged in Rosegarden, and generated by fluidsynth
- using the 'nskit' soundfont from 'natural studio'. I'm using
fluidsynth with the qsynth gui.
Now, this is my first problem:
Whenever I start Rosegarden's transport, I hear no drum sounds from
qsynth. If I click on qsynth's 'Channels' button, and then double-click
on the channel, I see "nskit_7free" in channel 1. If I either
double-click on that channel, or toggle the "preview" tick box,
fluidsynth starts generating audio output.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there something I can do to make the
settings permanent?
Thanks
Michael Nelson
Entirely monotonous (you've been warned); totally
unpolished; in it's formative stages; etc. etc.. I was
just excited at having produced anything at all with
my new Linux mini-studio, so ...

Hi guys. I'm not a demudi wizard, so I thought I'd post this question
for help. My dad recently sent me a midi file that sounds awful on
his machine, and requested that I make it sound better. I've only got
the standard onboard audio, so I'm assuming 8mb max of samples, or fm
synthesis. This midi file is mainly organ, so I'm thinking that
zynsynth might do it, but I thought I'd post for discussion this
question:
"What's the best way using a stock demudi and no external synthesizer,
to take a GM file and get the best possible sound out of my computer?
"
I know that initially, it won't matter if my playback device can't do
anything, but assuming there's a playback device included with demudi
that has good samples or synthesis, perhaps using some of the other
control codes that GM doesn't let me use may help?
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts.

Hi.
I have an ASUS A7V8X-X with a VIA82xx audio controller.
I can hear sound just fine, but I have some questions on this particular
hardware and its driver:
- - Since the assignment from input/output channel to the actual
connectors seems to be flexible, how can change or control these
assignments.
- - In particular, how do I assignment an input channel, since I can't
find a connector for input. With Windows I have no problems to record
anything.
Bye Jochen
