Yes, I'm searching for it now ;)
So my question is:'what is a good external usb soundcard with preamp,
midi, phantom power etc' ?
My budget is about 100 - 200 euro's...
thanks in advance,

I think it was position_fix=1 . There are some other parameters as well,
like "model" but google can tell you more about their use than me.
If you run the command line "alsamixer", it will tell you the actual chip in
question. Googling for that chip and alsa or ubuntu or whatever might give
you a straight answer on what parameters should be set. Another option would
be to google your specific laptop model and ubuntu, or hda intel etc.

Oh, I forgot. USB sound still doesn't work.

Acoustic needs a DI. With the electric you should probably mic the amp.
(unless there is no amp) Bass can go either way. For most bands I do both on
the bass because you will get a cleaner, better frequency range from the DI,
but putting a mic on the amp gets more "character". I usually do both and mix
them as desired. For a low budget gig though, you will probably get better
sound using a DI. (Because you probably don't have the right type of mics for
a bass cabnet anyway, and they cost more than a DI)

Hello,
I'm seriously considering buying a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop (the one
with Ubuntu pre-installed):

inspnnb_1525?
c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&~oid=uk~en~202~may_inspnb_1525_ubuntu_n0552515

I'm fairly new to linux (I mostly use Mac OS X) and would mainly use
the laptop for live audio work (running primarily PD and SuperCollider).
Does anyone have any experience with the 1525? Any advice?
Thanks a lot,

Hi
A question came up on the chuck list today, regarding how to invert the
phase of one channel. The poster wanted to use this "trick" to widen the
width of the stereo image, and it sure does.
However now I'm thinking if it's a good idea in the first place. Besides
loosing mono-compatibility, I have a gut feeling that audio treated this
way will become very uncomfortable or even annoying to listen to after a
while.
Does anyone have any thought about this? Should this "trick" simply be
avoided or are there situations where using it on some parts of a mix
would be ok (keeping in mind that the tracks in question will disappear
in mono)?

I have OpenSuse 10.3. , RoseGarden 1.6.1, Asus laptop, dual CPU T2130
1.86 Ghz with 1GB RAM
Soundcard SBx00 Azalia with driver snd-hda-intel
advanced options for sound card 0=auto, 1=none, 2 =posbuf, 3=Fifo size
When I play MIDI file with soft synth played via DSSl soft synth
plugin , I hear strange noises, a sort of vibrato crackling when notes
are played.
please advise how to remove those noises. I use FluidSynth3 Sf2 soundfonts.
Thanks,

You've come to the right place then!
>1. Which mic do you recommend?
Everyone has been mentioning dynamic microphones. For acoustic
guitar and voice I would go straight for a condenser to catch as
much nuance as possible. If you have no mics at all, I'd recommend
getting one dynamic and one condenser of comparable quality.
>2. Do I need a mixer?
Considering that you can get an interface with 8 inputs for the
cost of an 8 channel mixer and a stereo interface...definitely not!
I think it's much more practical to get an interface with all the
inputs you need, record on seperate tracks and mix in the software.

As previously suggestioned, the M-Audio Delta series sound cards
are very well supported by Linux and have a wide range of options.
Be wary of new Delta 1010 cards though, because they changed
something about them in 2007 that messed up their compatibility.
My website hosts a list of aaaaaaaaaaalmost all of the officially
supported interfaces: http://www.linuxstudiopro.com
You may also want to invest in studio monitors at some point. They
are expensive, but much more accurate and unbiased than even the
finest computer speakers. If you want to make good recordings and
mixes you need to hear the music accurately. We could talk about
recording and mixing environments as well...but you should just buy
a good book on recording.
Good Luck, Dirk!

Someone have experience with this soundcard?
I think this is a good soundcard, not expensive and with a good set of
connections... but I haven't found any info if this is supported under
linux...
someone have tried it?
thanks
