All,
Since we'll be buying a laptop for our oldest son's birthday I
though heck, perhaps I can piggyback on it when he's not using it
and maybe have an easy-to-use, light, way of recording sketches
and improvs on some weekends mornings in the living room. And
hopefully being able to take some of that to the main
workstation's Ardour setup for further development. Sketches
would be done using an accoustic guitar and a small MIDI
keyboard (using fluidsythn, zyn and perhaps linux sampler).
So here I have a few questions.
1) What is the most easiest-to-setup MIDI/audio interface for a
laptop ? Fedora 11 will be installed on the laptop. The laptop
will probably be a dual core with 2 to 4 GB of RAM and some 300
GB hard disk. The screen will probably 16". This will not be a
top-of-the-line laptop.
2) What are the options to record accoustic guitar ? Are a
traditional boom and mic the only way w/o having a built-in
pickup installed in the guitar ?
3) What would be the very smallest MIDI keyboard available ? I
have an Axiom 25 although something even smaller would be nice.
4) What are the options to hearing stuff ? So far I think that
the laptop's speakers, processed by Jamin could be OK. Are there
any small/tiny external speakers for this kind of application ?
5) On the software side, there should be no problems in running
any audio app on modern laptops ? Or are there distro/laptop
incompatibilities issues that would prevent jack from running for
instance ?
Finally, if there are any web sites dedicated to Linux laptop
audio recording, please let me know.
Thanks for your suggestions/ideas/comments !
Cheers.

Not yet. 0.12.0 only supports ALSA MIDI and JACK audio. The code
needs to be ripped apart and put back together again for 0.13.x, and
then it's a matter of supporting the other audio/MIDI frameworks one
by one. LASH, LADI, JACK MIDI, OSC, DSSI, and LV2 are all on the
todo list. I wanted to get a stable release out that just plain
works before this undertaking.

Define "fair"... price on these NOS chips started going up years
ago. I paid $60 for a wave-gen chip for a Juno-106 about five years
ago, and thought that was fair at the time. Chips for other synths
can range from a little less to a lot more. Check ebay, you might
get lucky.

Greetings,
64 Studio 2.1 is a wonderfully stable and reliable system, one I've used
profitably for quite a long time now. Alas, it's definitely out-of-date,
and its version of JACK is the lamentable 0.109.2, and it's causing some
problems with AVSynthesis that I'd like to finally resolve by upgrading
JACK.
I have 64 Studio 3.0 beta on my laptop, but I don't plan to upgrade the
production machine until 3.0 reaches a stable public release. Meanwhile
I'll be pleased if I can safely upgrade some of its components.
Here's the question: I've successfully compiled JACK 0.116.2 and JACK2
1.9.3, so in the opinions of my fellow LAUyers, which is the better
choice for this system ? If I move to JACK2 will I need to recompile my
JACK-savvy apps ? (That's not usually a problem.)
I await the dawn. :)

Sorry in advance for crossposting.
I am creating my own podcasts. However I am concerned about how the
songs and audio I'm using as background of my speeches is copyrighted.
So I wonder which repositories of CC licensed music are out there, so
I can download songs and use them freely as backgroud music in my
podcasts complying to their license simply by attributing. Ambient
style suits perfectly, but other styles could also be useful for me.
Any ideas useful so thanks in advance.
Cordially, Ismael

I agree. I don't know how Craig (the soundman) has the recording system
arranged, i.e. I have no idea what he's doing with EQ and other
settings. However, the place is a coffee shop with a capacity of about
~60 customers, and Craig always favors the voice. He's been running
instruments through the board too, but the sound out front is always
well-balanced and never too loud. Coffee Amici's Web site has some nice
photos of the place, you can get some idea of the environment from the
shots:

Will do, sir. :) Thanks for listening, Frank, and thank you for your
always-welcome comments.

A little clarification. Garry Ogle mentioned a statement I made
regarding his extended commentary on a recent piece. Here's the relevant
exchange:
At the end of his comments Garry wrote:

I replied:
> No apology necessary. I like reading such commentary, but alas, I
don't get much of it. Feel free to ramble on about whatever, whenever.
The reference was specific to the piece we were discussing and to
Garry's comments on it.
For the record, I post notices about my music at various places, and I'm
very happy with any & all response it generates. I shouldn't bitch about
missing in-depth commentary, I'm certainly not always as effusive as I'd
like to be wrt the music I hear from friends and colleagues, on LAU and
elsewhere. Alas, time is precious, and there's always pressing work.

Hi. I am trying to modify a version of easy peasy Linux so that it is more accessible on my netbook (an Acer Aspire1). Easy peasy is a derivative of Ubuntu and I am currently having problems with pulse audio. When using pulseaudio speech was a little laggy (even after switching to using speech-dispatcher). I also had some orca crashes, who's source is still unknown to me, though I have been informed it is probably because I am using a netbook.
When I use Alsa I still have the odd orca crash but this is usually easy to resolve simply by restarting orca, or killing and restarting speech-dispatcher. The problem is I have no system sounds and I get an Alsa error when trying to log in to Skype through the terminal, some problem with bluetooth something. I can paste the error later if it is of any use/reference.
I am now using Alsa but can't seem to get multi channel sounds, I.E speech and/or system sounds, I only have speech.
Any help fixing these issues and suggestions for alternative configurations/audio systems would be appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
Jen!

Hi list
I've just finished a collab with an awesome lyricist from USA
"Rockangel", she wrote a beautiful lyric, and to that lyric I wrote
music and played it all together. For the project I've used Ardour as
recorder, Electric YamahaDTXplorer drums, ZynAddSubFX bells, organ and
bass, my SG over a TC Nova system direct in, and a AKG C 3000B Mic for
my vocals and the acoustic guitar, my sound card is RME Multiface.
The song 320 Kb version in mp3:

It's kinda a pop/rock tune, lyrics and other details about the song can
be read here:

Constructive critics is welcome.
Thanks for reading.
