Dear linux-audio users,
I am new here, and the world of pro-audio, too.
I would like to run Kontakt on Linux.
(Or, to be more specific, I would like to run Galaxy Pianos, which is
powered by Kontakt.)
My prime candidate for the job is FST. Here is what I have:
- My system is a 64-bit Debian stable/testing/unstable hybrid installation.
- I have a working Jack2 installation, and I can use native applications
without problems. (Midi keyboard, fluidsynth, etc.)
- I have compiled and installed wine 1.3.34. (I created a 32-bit
installation.)
- I have checked out, compiled and installed the GIT version of Festige
(including FST)
If I run festige, and configure a directory containing the Kontakt VST
dll, festige finds them.
When calling "info" on a plugin, I get this on the console:
---------------------
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/mnt/user_data/home/pianist/local/share/festige/src/w_festige.py",
line 84, in run
output = getoutput(self.next_command)
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/commands.py", line 50, in getoutput
return getstatusoutput(cmd)[1]
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/commands.py", line 60, in getstatusoutput
text = pipe.read()
IOError: [Errno 4] Interrupted system call
---------------------
I checked and calling fstinfo.exe manually on the targeted DLL file
gives meaningful result, but still, the info feature fails with the
festige frontend.
When I try to actually launch a plugin (with Jack already running), I
get this:
---------------------
unknown option character l
jackdmp 1.9.8

`default' server already active

can't connect to JACK
---------------------
I guess it is starting to jack manually. But why? It would be great if
it would be configurable; for example, for me, jack is already
running, and is doing other things.
Anyway, if I stop jack, and let festige/fst start it, I get this:
---------------------
yo... lets see...

Any idea why can't it connect to jack?
(And what is the "unkown option character l" at the start?)

I am running jack2 (v1.9.7).
Can you help me fixing this?
Thank you for your help:

I have to agree. I tried several years with cheaper equipment, since for
me RME already is evil regarding to the costs. Anyway, I hardly
recommend to get a RME card if you are able to pay for it. I wasted too
much time using other cards.
Cheers!

Hi all,
Jackd does not start if an USB mouse is plugged into my laptop.
I am using an USB Audio card (Alesis IO|2)

Hello,
I want to share a radio broadcast test talk among with some background
music which is akin to binaural waves. You can find the recording here:
http://sutros.com/songs/20057
I am not a musician and this was my first try with lmms and audacity.
The talk is in Turkish which I originally sent to our google group:
http://groups.google.com/group/kaotik/browse_thread/thread/7146376de624663a
I will translate it to English.
Beware: It is a chaotic free association!
Bird
====
Good morning dear listeners!
Be ready to say hello to the new day with our slightly loony radio!
Today we are going to discuss birds. According to the statistics the
case of turning into a bird is observed more commonly among higher
educated, lonely or unemployed people. Another more interesting
statistic tells us that people who were born in winter have a 10% more
probability of turning into a bird compared to people born in the
summer.
If you still feel sleepy, listen to this! Experts say babies whose
mothers had flu on the second phase of their pregnancy have a higher
probability of borning as a bird.
Friends, before I leave you alone with music, I would like to mention
the symptoms of being a bird so you will be aware. Birds are extremely
careless. They may make cyclic movements akin to tics. It is also note
worthing that birds have decreased emotional senses and lack of eye
contact.
Last but not least, birds who destroy the barriers of their ego, *laugh*
when they talk about birds they suspect or fear.
Thank you for your patience!
Coming from Erkin Koray in this sunny Mayugust morning! Şaşkın[1]

Hi,
later than planned, but the third issue of "FLOSS your music" is
already online. In this one, the featured is Quirq, a
guitar/bass/keyboard player with a knack for prog rock. Check it out at:
http://xouba.net/post/14354798523/floss-your-music-quirq
In january the featured will be Atte André Jensen, otherwise known as
Modlys. Hopefully, without two weeks delay :-)

Hey everyone - happy holidays to you all!
With all of this radio talk going around, I wanted to ask a question
that has been on my mind lately: Is it possible to listen to
over-the-air radio (you know, the old kind) on your pc? If so, how
does that work? I'm assuming there would be some hardware that would
provide an antenna hook-up, but that's all I can think of.
I'm a big AM radio junkie...I used to love trying to pick up far-away
stations as a kid, so it would be a fun thing to put together.
Thanks LAU!

Friends,
In the course of the year I did a couple of applications that I'm pretty
proud of. For some good reasons, I've withheld releasing them publicly
until now:
Ivory - a multi-touch, virtual MIDI keyboard controller
This was originally intended as a proof of concept, but
was so much darn fun that I pushed it to a beta-level
application.
I don't recall if it works with a mouse or not... but
it's not nearly as cool with a mouse.
http://gitorious.org/gabrbedd/ivory
proaudio-sound-control - one-stop shopping for Jack and Alsa control
This is a mash-up of QJackCtl and QasMixer. It discards
the GIMP-like multi-window interface of QJackCtl (which
is a major pain on a mobile device). It also adds direct
access to hardware mixer controls by re-casting QasMixer
as a widget inside QJackCtl. Say way you want about the
visual style of QasMixer, but it's the most complete GUI
interface to ALSA I've found.
https://gitorious.org/gabrbedd/proaudio-sound-control
CAVEAT EMPTOR: This code is released AS-IS, and I have no plans to
maintain them. It's released in the hope that someone can benefit from
them.[1]
DEMO: There's a video here that demos these on the Indamixx 2 (at the
MeeGo conference last spring)
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/25/meego-conference-2011-sights-and-sounds-…
If you're in a hurry, fast-forward to about 1:13. It mostly demos
Ivory... but you also get brief views of proaudio-sound-control while
Tony is switching windows.

[1] For proaudio-sound-control... if someone decides to continue this
concept, you'll want to have a chat with me first. It works, but
is implemented in an unmaintainable way.
