In a complete and utter fervor today with some newfound extra cash I
impulsively purchased an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra, with the hopes and
prayers that it would "just work" on my Ubuntu Studio 10.04 system. My
confidence was quickly shattered when I got it home, plugged it in, and did
some research on it. There is a multitude of links out there with people
that have had problems with it in Linux, and a few have gotten it to work,
but I have no idea how.
So before I go back to the store I figured I'd reach out to the group to see
if anyone had any up-to-date information about this equipment, or if they
had any suggestions about something good I could exchange it for that might
"just work". I need at least 3 inputs (XLR & Quarter Inch) and cannot spend
much more than the $299 I got this M-Audio Fast Track Ultra for.
For reference sake, I'm having the exact same problem as referenced on this
forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=884329
but I don't really understand the directions on how they fixed the issue.

In case there's anybody else reading this list who is as confused as I was:
The Matrix Spatialiser plugin (and others I'm sure, too) has no obvious way
to control its value through the gui when used in Ardour or Mixbus. There
is just a text label that says "Width" with a number next to it and no
obvious way to manipulate the number. At first I took the roundabout way
and used automation to alter the value. Then I had my genius moment of the
day and realized that right or left clicking on the number would increment
the value (use a control or shift modifier for bigger increments). For some
reason this plugin won't store presets but that's not a huge concern for me
since there is only one value to change.
I hope this helps make somebody's day easier.

Hi guys,
This was definitely not the next email I was expecting to write to you.
Mixxx 1.9 became available for download through the Mac App Store on
Thursday, and we have quickly become the #1 Top Free App (Overall!) in
the USA, Germany, Japan, Italy, Mexico, Greece, Chile, and probably
more countries. We're also the #2 app in Brazil, Canada, France, UK,
and I expect we will take the #1 position in at least those countries.

app.html
I think I owe the community a more detailed blog post about this whole
situation at some point. Open source deserves to be at the top, and
that's where you took us.
Congratulations,
Albert

This was my question in IRC – and thanks to those investigating on my
behalf. I’m a total Linux newbie. Let me do my best to explain:
I’m on KXStudio, where all audio goes through Jack (as I understand it).
When I switch my firewire device (Phonic Firefly) on, jack recognizes it
straight away and runs all audio through it instead of my onboard PCM.
That’s great! However, if I want to turn my firewire device off and have all
sound go through the onboard PCM again (and subsequently my built-in
computer speakers), this doesn’t work! When I turn the firewire off, jack
simply stops completely and I have to ‘force restart’ a couple of times to
get sound out of my speakers.
It’s not the end of the world – I just wondered if it’s fixable as Windows
was able to automatically switch between my firewire and onboard cards with
no problem. I’m a graphic designer by trade and if I’m just listening to
music I don’t want to use my firewire device to do so. But if inspiration
strikes spontaneously I just want to switch my firewire on, lay down some
recordings, then turn it off and go back to using onboard audio… preferably.
Sorry if my terminology’s off – just say if I can explain myself better.

Hello, how hard is it to get a no-os laptop or linux-preinstalled in europe?
In particular thinkpads?
Also, what about getting refunds for the windows os - is it possible and
what companies are easier to deal with?

Got it. Though on first attempt to start it again jackdbus was frozen... When i started it, i just connected ports, then activated programs and got sound without to wait. It seems, that gui is not enough to do all settings.
Minicomputer is launched by command "minicomputer", connected mix ports to card and virtual keyboard (vmpk) to synth.
Now in gui: set mix and both aux volumes in amp to max, pan to middle, and (again) volume of both oscillators (between their frames and filter frames, right?), and still don't have sound.

Yep, probably, it is not necessary very much, since there is jack backend for alsa. But objects and ports, it creates, have useless names. If two or more alsa apps are started, and then i launch patchbay, i can't associate them with apps. For some apps i don't need to have ports in patchbay at all, and connecting them to pulseaudio has value.
jack2-simple-config utility, shipped with kxstudio, allowes to disable pulseaudio at all, though i have it - just to be safe :] (of course, not as alsa-to-jack bridge... just to be safe)
