hi all,
Phoronix pointed out that an Amazon seller called Butterfly Media was
reselling some floss projects like scribus and inkscape. I just checked out
their "product" on amazon and found this:

>From the product description, it seem they are trying to sell mixxx. Then
again, the screenshots clearly show Ardour, LMMS and mixxx. Whichever way,
it seems some questionable business is going on.

There is not mistake. Each way has advantages and disadvantages. As for me - when i work with pro audio software, i don't like to lost jack-less applications, like web browser. For most software, which may, there are default settings to use jack - i.e., audacious, vlc, and kde sound system has jack backend at highest priority. As for switch between firewire / alsa - it could be done easily, as simple as lash_button (but checkbox and written with python... probably, even as some applet).
Btw, latest version of jack2-simple-config in KXStudio has own configurator, which can change settings on the fly, but when i changed backend between dummy and alsa (firewire - did not use yet), changes take effect only when i stop and start jack later (oh, studio). Also it is nice, to have some effects host (ingen or some rack) for output. I.e., i have ladish project with jack-rack (with Plate Reverb Stero) and musescore, because freeverb, used in fluidsynth, as much as all other convolver-based reverbs, can't give good results for short reverbs (in JR i muted long reverb, that sounds like reall hall). Since freeverb has only one very long impulse, it just truncates it for short reverbs, producing awful result (more like resonance of huge metallic list, that reverb).
Hey guys!
Recently started some form of electroproject in ardour, and as always
sidechaining is needed. Right now I'm routing everything that's to be
sidechained (which is everything but the kick lol) into a 3-channel bus with
a SC3 on connected to the kick. The sidechaining works, but i actually get a
very noticable quality loss and thining of the stereoimage from using the
SC3..
Is this something you know of, something that can be worked around? Also,
are there other sidechain soloutions? I mean sidechaining like the SC3, a
compressor controlled by for example the kicksignal.
Regards!
Thanks for sharing the link Robin. I'll give it a whirl - not necessarily to
fix the firewire issue but just because it's always good to simplify things
(by cutting out the (PulseAudio) middleman).

If someone has a copy of Acrobat Professional (yah, sorry, junk $$$
Windows/Mac software!), it can be used to convert an entire website
(such as a wiki) into a PDF.

I wish I had the time. Used to make a living as a tech writer that wrote
user manuals ...

Hello, all,
So, thanks to the excellent advice received on this list, I recently
purchased a Roland UA25EX and it works just great, and out of the box at
that.
Also thanks to this list, I now have my RT kernel sorted out, lean and
mean as ever. All great!
With my (crappy) internal sound interface, I used to be able to leave
jack running for days at "-p128" without any problem, at least with my
new kernel. With my new USB soundcard, however, jack works flawlessly
for a few hours and then abruptly exits saying something to the effect
that jack timed out and the watchdog is doing its painful duty.
Here is my jack command-line:
$ jackd -P61 -t100 -d alsa -d hw:2,0 -p128 -r 44100
I tried adding "-v" for good measure and redirecting to a file, here's
what it looks like before the downfall:
-Couple 100K of boredom- [...]
load = 0.2478 max usecs: 4.000, spare = 1447.000
load = 0.2273 max usecs: 3.000, spare = 1448.000
load = 0.2859 max usecs: 5.000, spare = 1446.000
(and then tonnes of)
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 0.029 msecs
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 0.025 msecs
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 0.026 msecs
**** alsa_pcm: xrun of at least 0.024 msecs
---and so forth until jackd gets killed.
Does anyone know what the problem could be? Is something wrong with my
jackd command-line? Is there anything further I can do to debug?
Cheers,
S.M.

Hey all,
After getting scorched by purchasing two laptops with almost zero
Linux support (battery status? what battery?), I have decided to go
looking for a laptop that is sold by a company that supports Linux.
I'm looking for any pointers to companies that sell Laptops that run
Linux here in the US. (I'm already familiar with System76.) Bonus
points if you've done business with them and have praise or warnings
to go along with the pointers. Feel free to shill for your own
company if you want, just make sure if you recommend a laptop that
Linux can read the damn battery status. :)
Thanks,
Josh

Hi,
I'm experiencing a seqfault when running Petri-Foo:
[~]$ petri-foo
lash_open_socket: could not connect to host 'localhost', service '14541'
lash_comm_connect_to_server: could not create server connection
JACK error: This system has no accessible HPET device (Device or resource busy)
Connected to JACK server with client name 'LASH_Server'
Opened ALSA sequencer with client ID 130
Listening for connections
Created project project-1 in directory /home/josh/audio-projects/project-1
Added client 87edbf96-21e0-4085-9c2b-3c512400aea6 of class petri-foo
to project project-1
Client 87edbf96-21e0-4085-9c2b-3c512400aea6 set its name to 'petri-foo'
Segmentation fault
[~]$ Client petri-foo removed from project project-1
Project project-1 removed
there are two things here that aren't clear to me:
1. I configured the software with --disable-lash, yet it's trying to
start lash anyway...
2. members of the audio group have permissions to use (is that the
right word?) the HPET timer, but it's saying it's busy, maybe because
jack is already running?
not sure if either of these two things matter, but there they are.
running the latest version of av linux. please let me know if you
need more information.
thanks,
Josh
