Just to pick a nit:
Audio predates MIDI by about 30 years. Being out of reach I'll agree
with, for sure!, but there were tube D/A converters being built in the
late 50's at MIT (meaning the resistor ladder type guts, not any
"audiophile" type of thing). Tom Stockham and the Soundstream were
pre-MIDI, there were various things going on in Europe, and the Synclavier
was doing sampling and resynthesis (not sampling playback as we know it)
before MIDI.
MIDI was '84-ish, and coincides roughly with the release of the Ensoniq
Mirage -- the first sampler for under $10,000, but there were a lot of
expensive computer systems (standalone or general purpose) that knew
something about audio.
Cheers,
Phil Mendelsohn

Hi Sebastian,
This is a really nice song. Please let me know when you've written more.

Hi all,
Although I'm skeptical that any "audio" from Saturn, especially sampled
at 5 kHz is meaningful, it certainly is fun to listen to. It's a good
PR thing for NASA to do, I guess... My inner child enjoyed it immensely.
Anyway, I took the file and processed it with some of the audio tools that
I wrote myself (the true power of GNU/Linux as applied to audio):
1) Upsampled to 44,100 samples/sec using FFT resampler (Sampster, in case
anyone cares).
2) Applied stereo convolution reverb (Verbster) with IR's that I calculated
for a large room (Boxster).
3) For more fun: Applied a phasor tool I wrote (Phazster) so the sound moves
around a little.
4) oggenc

This was about a ten-minute exercise, so isn't optimized in any way.
One of the benefits of listening to binaural images with headphones (which
is what this case was aimed at) is that you can hear more in a sense. We
aren't well-designed to listen to mono, and it's annoying to listen to when
trying to analyze a sound.
Hope you all have fun listening to it. I'm now out of web space, so I
cannot add a techno groove and put up another version. (What a shame, huh?)
Regards to all,
Dave.
Hi to James Stone and James Shuttleworth. Someone (cough) mentioned choons the
other day and got me back on the decks. I've got Cheesetracker and
Soundtracker and have been having a go at trance and techno stuff, but would
really like to do some 90's style breakbeat (155+BPM). I just can't figure
out how to set up the breakbeat patterns. If either of you have the time to
send me a single pattern to give me a start I'd be very gratefull. Nigel.
Hi,
I've posted this to CCRMA and LAU, hope this is OK.
s/w FC3, 2.6.11-0.3.rdt.rhfc3 kernal, Ensoniq AudioPCI, acpi=off pci=noacpi
no-hlt.
1) I recently upgraded from a Celeron 633 to a PIII 866 and now I can't get
48K to work properly. I set qjackctl 48000 but when I start it it reports
47010, Ardour reports 4.7K and QSynth/Fluidsynth is out of tune by about a
tone. The clock also seems to be gaining time. This has happened to be
before on my laptop (no upgrade, stuff was just out of tune). Suspect ACPI,
any thoughts ?
2) Ardour segfaults when I try to resize (time stretch) a bit of audio
(latest CCRMA reository)
3) I use the big free NS drum font and now and again, a sample sounds like
it's coming from 'both' speakers rather than between them when using
fluidsynth, I also happens with other fonts and non-percussive instruments,
sonds like a phase shift of some sort, happends on both my machines, anyone
else noticed this ?
4) I did some christmas carol arangements for guitar
http://www.geocities.com/brooslea/, my first tinkerings with Lillypond, does
this qualify for Made With Linux ? Has anyone got a server I can stick them
on cos nobody can see them where they are. Also, any feedback on the
lilyponding from lilypond guru's (in particular the placement of some of the
rests) and the arrangements from guitar guru's gratefully recieved.
5) Anybody got latency figures for usb soundcards ?
6) Getting archives for ardour mailing lists - sourceforge generally. Where
do I go to download a tarball of the mail archives on sourceforge ?
7) CCRMA low latency kernal : When it says experimental kernal 'may not work
with your hardware' does this mean 'sound card' or are there many other
issues ?
8) Issues with anacron and initial experience for music users shifting from
Windows to linux : I've not seen alot of discussion about disabling various
services (particualryly anacron) in install guides (CCRMA), any chance of
adding this with a list of services to disable on the CCRMA install pages ?
9) Would it be a good idea to mention early on on the ccrma site that
problems with sound cards should be directed at the alsa development team ?
I posted some stuff to the linux-audio-dev mailing list about the trident
sound driver (before I got my barings) and it took months to make its way to
the alsa team.
10) Any chance of the most up-to-date version of alsa in the core repository
(The one that fixes my problem (sis sound chip)) ? As I understand it, if
you want to recompile alsa, you have to recompile ther kernal (somthing I
have not yet had the guts to do) and I understand it can take all night.
11) Any chance you could add the business of alsa not starting properly on
FC3 to CCRMA install documentation. Alot of pelple aquire their FC
distributions from the back of a book or download it and then take a long
time to become aware of the updates (that seem to fix the problem). This one
took me ages.
Thanks for all your help - IT WORKS !
Cheers,
Bruce.
I've heard and seen this Jamin controller plugin to automate
scene switching from within Ardour, but I haven't been able to
find it. Does anyone know where it's available?
thanks,

Great sound!
Except one thing though. The bass is far far too loud! The bassist was the
one mixing this tune right? :-)
You could also put some more compression on the bass as well I think, its
quite bumpy. (Might sound like there are some frequencies in the range
200-400 that is too loud...)
Nice drum-sound by the way. Sounds real, didn't hear that it was a
drum-machine before I read it on the web-page.
Thanks Jan and Kevin.
Sorry it took me so long to reply to this. I've been doing other
stuff... 8^(
I tried it and it works perfectly. I have several small scripts to
start envy24control with different numbers of guzintas/guzoutas so I
just added the alsactl restore command before the envy24control command
in each one and it comes up ready to rock n roll! That'll save me hours
in the long run. Thanks again.
(Sure would be nice if the man page for envy24control mentioned that
file and command.)

You then have to do 'alsactl restore' after the reboot.
