Greetings,
I always give my best effort before bothering anyone on this list. I
just can't find the missing peice.
Here's the situation:
I create sequence tracks in jazz. Then I record live tracks in
ecasound while the midi file plays via timidiy. The problem is that
jazz plays from the sound card and timidity can only play .pat files. I
create a lush sounding recording in jazz and when I play it with
timidity, it sounds weak. Appeartenly, ecasound only supports playing
midi files via timidiy. And timidiy can't access the sounds on the sound
card.
I've been looking all over for several solutions:
(1) A midi to wav converter that creates a wav that sounds like what I
created in jazz (via the sound card). Then I can just play the wav in
ecasound while I record my live tracks along with it. (Timidity will
covert to wav, but it's the .pat sounds). I tried using vsound, but it
fails with every midi player I've tried.
(2) I keep hearing about alsa "capturing" sound. I can't find any
documentation on what and how it "captures". Can I press play in a midi
player and the sound can be recorded to wav? If so, how?
(3) Is there a program that converts .sf2 to .pat. If so, then when I
play midi files with timidity, they will sound like what I created with
jazz.
Thanks in advance...
Rocco

Nice Article! How did you manage to get SOS to run a Linux article? I
was wondering if it would ever happen ;-)
Maybe one day there'll even be a "Linux notes" section at the back
alongside mac & pc. ah, i can dream :-)

Thank you! Looks like a good thing to start with.

Just subscribed to it´s list ;-).
It is indeed. After having used HALion for about half a year, I started
do dislike it a lot - and you can´t email the developers "Hey guys, how
about fixing this and doing that in a different way"... ;-)))

I did so before I wrote, but could not find a clear answer. But now I
have something to get going.
Thanks again,

Hello to all,
I´m searching for some kind of a HALion replacement on Linux. Just a
simple engine that responses to MIDI Note on/off and Main Volume per
channel, and that can be triggered using some sequencer (as MUSE or
Rosegarden).
Any hint would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,

hi all...
firstly, please forgive me for crossposting - im trying to find the most
appropriate list for the problems i've been experiencing with loud
distorted noise running the usb quattro under mandrake 9.0....
i've ascertained now that it isnt a conflict with X, or with the mouse,
as i booted into runlevel 3 and played a wav from the command line with
exactly the same results. i had my doubts about this anyhow as i'm
running this on a thinkpad 600e - it doesnt have much in the way of
video acceleration from what i gather (NeoMagic 256 i think is the
graphics chip)....
i've been messing around adding and subtracting stuff from sysvinit and
loading modules manually to see what might be conflicting, i've tried
the mwave modem as well, as modems have often been the culprit for
device conflicts, but this doesnt seem to make any difference.
so far i've drawn a blank... it puzzles me, as i was happily running
alsa for the usb quattro under mandrake 8.2 with no problems whatsoever.
before i wipe everything (again!) and go back to 8.2 in desperation....
does anyone know of any issues or differences between sound under mdk
8.2 and 9.0? or any known issues with the quattro driver that might
cause this kind of heavily distorted sound? i've checked it isnt a fault
with my quattro as i ran it under windows (yuk!) and found that it ran fine.
the only difference in my setup that might be worth noting is that under
8.2 i didnt realise that mandrake installed its own alsa - i grabbed a
tarball from alsa-project.org and just installed it over the top and it
seemed to work fine. with 9.0 i've decided to go with mandrake's alsa
rpms, simply because i went through hell with conflicts between 9.0's
rpms and the tarballs earlier... on this fresh install i kept things
simple. maybe i should switch back to tarball? or maybe i should upgrade
from the supplied alsa 0.9.rc2 ? were there changes in the way usb is
treated in 9.0 as compared to 8.2 perhaps?...
i can also get the distortion down to a listenable level - although
still very much present - by playing mp3s in alsaplayer with the volume
level down to 1%.... this is hardly satisfactory though and doesnt seem
to work in any other apps (doesnt work at all under oss emulation)...
sound level has always started out very loud with the quattro but never
distorted like this... i've never had this problem at all until i
installed mdk 9.0...
any suggestions would be very gratefully received!
thanks in advance,
m~

All,
Mark Knecht has run Benno Senoner's Latency Test program on ext2, ext3,
fat32, and reiser filesystems and has graciously sent me his write-up
and graphs. I have added these to my web page at
http://myweb.cableone.net/eviltwin69/ALSA_JACK_ARDOUR.html. They're
well worth checking out. After seeing his tests I ran a few quick tests
of my own and have now switched filesystems!

Hello,
I've been trying to compile tapiir (0.6) but I'm getting the following error during configure:
checking for numericsort in -lfltk... no
configure: error: missing fltk
but I _do_ have fltk installed. I tried with fltk1.1.1 and 1.1.2.
Trying to run the binary version I get a message that libfltk.so.1 is missing so I checked and linked libfltk.so.1.1 to libfltk.so.1
Then, the app starts segfaults.
gdb reports this:

Anyone else having problems with some of the latest cvs ardour versions not
being able to start new projects or load old ones? Every time I try to start
a new one or load an old one the program just closes. Is there something I'm
forgetting to configure?
